Looks like Theo/Jed are looking more toward the future than immediate success. Does this mean the odds of Garza leaving just went up?

I don’t know that I would go quite that far, but I can certainly understand your concern. It does make sense though: the Reds have two years left to make the most of their talent while Votto and Phillips are still in the lineup. After that, it’s almost certain that Votto will not fit in the budget. We don’t know what will happen with Phillips. Why not go all-in, and hope for the best? Don’t forget, the Reds have plenty of prospects in A and AA that aren’t being traded away. I’m optimistic for the season, and I’m hoping that Jocketty has a solid plan in place.

If Theo can sucker another GM into taking Soriano he will get executive of the year. The Cubs could pay his salary in full and I wouldn’t want Soriano on my team.

they do do have a left fielder they just refuse to play him. look at his numbers compared to the guys they want to put out there in place of him. you say he can’t hit lefties but we won’t know that for sure until he gets a chance to face them on a regular basis. you have to play to get in a groove and for reasons only dusty knows he won’t play him. yea better to sign washed up cqrds like ludwig or ankiel or castoffs like ross and pay them double to not put up Heisey’s numbers. it is ok to play stubbs everyday and watch him strike out 5 times a game and not give Heisey a chance. if you can put gomes out there everyday and watch him suck for almost 2 years then Heisey deserves at least 1 month to see if he can do the job.this should have been done last year when they finally dumped gomes but no dusty went with the immortal fred lewis instead.

As a Reds fan, I like the trade.

Every team in baseball needs left-handed, relief pitching. Sean has been successful two straight years in a ballpark not unlike GABP. It’s not easy to remember how important Arthur Rhodes was to the 2010 playoff run; Sean Marshall is better and far younger.

I hate to give up Travis, especially with his solid minor league numbers; but, we all know that mid-market teams can’t win with potential. The move makes the major league club much better and much deeper. There isn’t enough room in the rotation for Wood. Homer is more talented and I think Leake will prove to more reliable.

My only question is if Walt realizes he doesn’t have a left fielder.

this is worse than the padres deal! you give up a young left handed pitcher under control for 4 more years for a granted good relief pitcher making 3 million dollars who will leave at the end of the year? and toss in 2 minor leaguers? end the suspense now walt and announce the signing of your boys from st. louis to complete the transformation of the reds to 2012 world series champs.

Good job by Jed/Theo to recoup some value for a reliever who probably wasn’t gonna be part of the next Cubs contender. Wood is young and cheap, and if the prospects are anything that matters that’s just icing on the cake.

I think this is a good move for both teams. Marshall is often dominant in middle relief, you cannot have enough of those guys.

Stupid move on Reds side. Jocketty seems hellbent on unloading every minor league prospect Cincinnati has for middle of the road talent. Two bad trades in a row.

Exellent move Hoyer!

Marshall was a left handed starter who just couldn’t seem to put it together three years ago. Now, they turned him into the exact same person, who is cheaper and under long term team control.

Saving the three million is not important, but having an additional $3m they can package with Soriano so someone will take him is huge.

And the prospects (probably mostly not-real-prospects) are just sugar coating on top.
