The AL Central is a perpetually winnable division. A team that would play .500 ball in the AL East would run away with the Central in the average season.

Exactly. I don’t think Williams would trade Danks before this season because, like you said, sign and trades are so rare in baseball. But if Chicago is competitive in a year or two, great, keep Danks. And if they’re still rebuilding, then trade him and his 3 or 4 more years for more prospects to help with the rebuild.

Yeah, Greg, my first thought was, ‘no trade clause’? A sign and trade is rare in MLB, but since it is NY and Boston that are particularly interested, makes one wonder. If I am Danks (and agent) I would insist on one. No sense tying up your hands if you could still be dealt to the free-spending AL East reapers.

Two possibilities that still keep rebuilding in play:

(1) Williams is assuming the White Sox’ rebuilding phase will be complete and they’ll be competitive again in one or two seasons, meaning Danks will be locked up at 13 per for 3 or 4 more years at that point.

(2) Depending on a potential no-trade clause (or, really, the lack thereof), Williams thinks Danks will be a more valuable trade chip in the near future while attached to a reasonable contract over the next five years.

That’s my initial reaction, at least.
