If they keep Walt around, get used to Reds prospects rarely making it to the team….as far as he is concerned, they are assets to trade for “reliable” veterans.

so in response to not getting any deals done during the meetings walt is going to trade farm system away?he just helped the rebuilding of the cubs proceed alot faster. sappelt will be their starting centerfielder in 2 yeras if not sooner and as long as he is not batting leadoff and will be a fine hitter. wood will win between 15-17 games for them and that infielder will be in the majors in 2 years. and wait for the big annoucement of the signing of the former cards ankiel or ludwig to be overpaid to not put up the numbers Heisey did last year in less at bats than either of them. but they played for walt’s beloved cardinals back when they were good so they will put the reds over the top. why am I dreading next season so much?

The Reds only had 22 blown saves all year, and they allegedly lost 20 games when leading after 7? They only blew 22 saves all year….and there is no way that one reliever is going to cut those 22 blown saves in 1/2….blown saves can occur anytime after the 5th inning after the starter is out of the game, there is just no way for one guy to have that big of an effect, even a closer, when pitching only 75 innings/year.

I’m more upset that Wood is in this deal than sappelt & a prospect. Reds overpaid on this one.

The numbers I reported are the LOSSES after a lead. It will improve the numbers by at least 1/2. Read the stats for yourself. The Reds had a problem early with Cordero blowing saves, then mid relief/set up man, losing the lead after 7 innings for LOSSES. You can check this out for yourself, if interested.

I hope Sappelt gets a more appropriate slot to bat in than the #2 Dusty put him in most of the time. .286 OBP, no steals in 65 PA in that slot. Good glove though.

Ugh. I was fine when it was Wood + spare parts, but Torreys slaps the ball everywhere and plays middle infield and Sappelt can play anywhere in the OF at the MLB level TODAY. Reds over did it, unless we find out Marshall agreed to extend his deal.

It will not improve by 1/2 or anything approaching 1/2. Relievers simply don’t have that big of an effect. In addition, all blown saves don’t lead to losses, indeed, many do not.

Cinci’s team leaders in blown saves were Cordero and Massett, each with 6. Marshall had 4 blown saves last year. Assuming Marshall stays excellent, you can probably hope for 2 or 3 fewer blown saves and 1 or 2 more wins.

This benefits the Reds more than people think. The Reds had more than 15 blown saves in the 8th & 9th innings last season. If you count the 7th inning, they blew more than 20 leads. The move for Marshall is hoped to improve that by at least half. With 10-15 more games won, that is a very big affect. it puts them in the hunt for the division for the whole year, rather than folding early in August or Sept. All a team has to do is stay close or lead through Sept. Look what the cards did in 2011, and they weren’t even that close to the
Wild C., much less the division title.
