While visiting back home this past week (also StL), I have been shocked by the total concordance of opinion of all of my relatives (even my mother and sister, who are typically complete homers for players and hate to see any beloved figure leave....like Eckstein) about Pujols leaving. Everyone thought:

1) too many years
2) too many dollars
3) it was about the money and nothing else
4) he's a hypocrite
5) that the Cardinals will be better off without the contract
6) Pujol's restaurant is an over-priced burger joint with bad food.

I have been surprised, we don't all agree on anything, ever.

I disagree with regards to Miller. Command and control of the ball are his green eggs and ham. He would not learn them college, he would not learn them in the minors, he would not learn them in the Majors. He would not learn them in Detroit, he would not learn them in Florida, he will no learn them in Boston. He will no learn them on a train... etc.

His lack of confidence is just a symptom of his real problem: he sucks at pitching.

Lucas - yes, you're right - though I think Maybin had only about 50 ABs with the Tiggers (I don't know what their history with Miller was). The Feesh kept running Miller and his deer-in-the-headlights expression out there to to get pounded every fifth day when it would have been clear to a Cricket fan that he wasn't ready for prime time. I think they trashed his confidence. Maybin was just a matter of patience and they didn't have it for him. Ah well.

Gator, he was a young 'un, no doubt about it and really has not fully matured. Still strikes out too much but since he's balls to the walls type it could be a challenge keeping him healthy. Think the future is bright with the Marlins with a healthy Johnson, Stanton, Reyes, Ramirez, if he get's his head on straight, know they want to make a statement and I'm thinking in that division this year, Mets are going to be dead last which should give the NY media something to cry about.

In all fairness, the Tigers didn't "give up" on him, he was part of a massive trade. And, Gator (for some reason I can't reply directly to your post), the Tigers had a huge hand in ruining both of those guys (Maybin and Miller) too. They didn't come up for the first time with the Feesh, they got their feet wet in the majors with Detroit, who rushed both of them up way too soon.

Maybin came up with the Feesh when he was barely 21. Too soon - the Feesh figured that having dumped Cabrera and Willis that they had to put something on the field immediately. They ruined Andrew Miller the same way. A little more time in the minors would have done Maybin wonders and another year and a half or so would have made Miller much better and much more confident. As it is, Maybin is looking more and more like the one who got away, despite the improvement to the Feesh boolpen represented by Mujica and Webb.

He can roam the big center field there for a long time which was one of the better Hoyer moves over last winter. So it will indeed keep his salary down, ballpark 5 year 40 million or so.

Amazing that Maybin is still only 24. Seems like he's been a hot-shit prospect since the Clinton administration. Credit to the Marlins for giving the guy a shot after two teams gave up on him. He was a good CF last year and he's still got untapped potential. With PETCO holding his raw numbers down they'll probably get a pretty good deal on extending him too.

It's alright Drew, just casually explain the merits of his defense and baserunning, which ties into his WAR (another concept you may have to explain), then explain the impracticality of paying Pujols through his age 41 season, the myth of clutch hitting and his declining skillset. They'll understand.
