I made fun of Paul O’Neill getting a HOF vote from Bloom but guys like Mora and O’Neill were more typical of the guys on our favorite teams than a clear cut hall-of-famer. We remember when they got the big hit to win a mid-June game even though our team finished in fourth place that year.

I remember when I took my 10 year old son and his friends to a Cardinals Open House. The kids wanted autographs from Thomas Howard and Joe McEwing while I tried to explain to them why they should want Ken Dayley’s or Ken Reitz’s autograph. None of those guys will be in the HOF but they gave a lot of fans a lot of good memories.

Not every player will be a Musial or Pujols. But without the Moras and Daleys and McEwings the game would not be the same and neither would our memories.

Mora was a stud both as a baseball player and as a man. He and his wife had 6 kids including quintuplets. He was a terrific family man and I always enjoyed watching him play baseball.

Hell of a career for a guy who didn’t reach the majors until he was 27 and didn’t get 600 plate appearances in a season until he was 30.

Melvin Mora was one of those solid baseball players that never made headlines, but he always seemed to do something against the Red Sox to catch my eye while he played them. Good luck to Melvin, good player and from everything I have heard great guy.

Mora was a solid major leaguer and terrific family man. With that being said, it still pisses me off that the Mets traded him for zero production from Mike Bordick only to have Bordick re-sign with the O’s and Mora blossomed.

Only a few years till some sportswriter ties himself up in knots explaining the decision to vote Mora for the Hall of Fame but not marginal candidates like Bagwell, Clemens and Bonds.
