Hopefully this guy will be a decent regular patrolling RF for the Sox in 2013, but 2012 seems to be a stop-gap season in RF for the Sox, cant really sugarcoat it to anything better.

Scouts are pretty impartial. He may be overrated by the media’s bias towards big markets, but scouts and prospect mavens consistently rate prospects regardless of what team they’re for. (And, in fact, better prospects tend to be on worse teams, due to draft position.) As an example, take your ” if he played for the Padres no one would even know who he was” comment. It’s unintentionally ironic, because one of the players traded to the Padres last year, Anthony Rizzo, has seen his prospect star rise considerably. He’s much more hyped now that he’s in San Diego, because where you are matters a lot less in the prospect world than what you’ve done.

Prospecting for prospects is much more merit-based than, say, the major league gold gloves, which are just given to whoever’s been around a while, particularly on big media market teams.

As to Kalish’s quality, an important scouting issue is Age Related to League (often shortened to ARL). Hitting as well as Kalish did in the high minors at the age of 22 (and in pitcher’s leagues, no less) is pretty big.

He’s been hit with injuries in the year since, and he needs to prove he’s the same player he was in 2010. But that was an excellent player, so he’s got a lot of upside.

I he really well thought of by scouts? He had a decent 2010 season but most of the damage was done in Double A and it was only 78 games total. In the majors he hit just 252/305/410, not terrible at 22 but obviously not great. I just think it’s funny on how overrated Boston (and New York) prospects get – if he played for the Padres no one would even know who he was (nor would anyone think he’d be a starter in 2011).

b) 2010 was his breakout year, but he also lost his prospect status. That is why you’re not seeing him as a highly ranked prospect. He is quite well thought of by scouts.

Good teams let their prospects attempt to break in, with backup plans if they’re not sure they can hack it. Boston has a pretty good track record of breaking in young players.

He’s a less heralded prospect than Aaron Cunningham who was just traded for a Double A reliever. Yet a team with World Series aspirations is reportedly planning on using him as a starter. Granted he can probably match what Carl Crawford did last season at 2% of the cost but it doesn’t seem like the best plan.

Teams are constantly having their prospects try new things such as batting stances and strategy dealing with various pitch counts. They may be happy with seemingly low numbers as long as they see substantive progress towards becoming major league ready. A lot of players with sub standard minor league numbers perform quite well in the majors, while other players with great minor league stats flame out in the majors.
