There are no "upgrades" available. The most likely alternative is some below average AAAA guy. It's hard to find quality players to fill reserve roles at low salaries. Even if he reaches all his incentives, he will earn less in 2012 than Arizona is paying 2 below replacement level utility infielders with multi-year contracts.

Who cares if he smiles? This is an "over the hill" guy who can outplay almost every reasonable alternative. I know people think the Yankees can go sign everyone, but most players who can start and make more money somewhere else choose to do so.

He's had a very weird career path. He was had a long stretch of being arguably the best defensive player in the game, he's had some huge years including a 50 home run season... and then he was seemingly done by 30. And now he's having a second career as a right handed platoon outfielder. Hell, he might make it to 500 home runs as a part-time player. He doesn't feel like a HOFer but looking at the full scope of his career, it's hard to argue that he's not.

but last time I brought up his strikeouts I was told by another poster that his ratio wasn’t all that bad

It's a trade off. He had the highest K% on the team (after filtering out guys like Dickerson), but the second highest BB% and third highest ISO (second if you remove Montero). He's a three true outcomes player who destroys lefties and plays a decent LF still.

I guess we could ask the same question as to why the Red Sox didn't sign Jones last year instead of Crawford. They were both available for the 2011 season and from the looks of it their numbers are not that dissimilar. In fact one might even contend that Jones had a better year.

My friend I seriously doubt that was the case. It's hard to put pressure on a GM to sign a player that they intend to platoon. Besides Jones contract is for exactly the same dollars as he made last year with the incentives he earned in 2011. So it's not like he got a huge raise.

Yeah, I'm with you Ben. JAWS would be interesting to look at. He peaked really early but he was consistently a 7 win player in his early to mid-twenties. As you mentioned a lot of that value comes from excellent UZR numbers but that seems to match the eye test. The man was a tremendous center fielder.

At first I thought, pssh, that's absurd. And then I looked at his WAR total. Dude's got 71.7 fWAR. Now obviously a lot of that depends on how much you trust UZR, but that's impressive.
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/is-andruw-jones-a-hall-of-famer/

He's probably not by Bill James' stats:
Black Ink	Batting - 10 (237), Average HOFer ≈ 27
Gray Ink	Batting - 47 (533), Average HOFer ≈ 144
Hall of Fame Monitor	Batting - 108 (140), Likely HOFer ≈ 100
Hall of Fame Standards	Batting - 33 (236), Average HOFer ≈ 50

I'd be curious to see what JAWS makes of his career.

I don't know if this is good bad or ugly, I was hoping for more of an upgrade, but last time I brought up his strikeouts I was told by another poster that his ratio wasn't all that bad, but just about every time I saw him he was striking out and what really got to me was he always smiled, hence: Andrew (smiling strikeout) Jones.
