I am a Cubs fan and all for getting rid of who we need to so that bad contracts and payroll can get freed up but I can’t help but think that if the Cubs get rid of Garza and are presumably out of the Fielder sweepstakes then it seems like this a for sure throw away year and I wonder who is actually going to put down $50+ to see a team of mostly prospects and players who will probably be gone the following season. I go to at least 2-4 Cubs games a year but I think I might just save that money for something else. Maybe Blackhawks Stanley Cup tickets?

His major splash was signing Kevin Millar. Or maybe trading Hanley Ramirez for Josh Beckett…..which is a push at best Sox fans.

uyf1950: I agree about the 1st World Title. The core of that team was definitely in place before he came onboard. The one thing I will say is that he didn’t screw it up, which is more than can be said for a lot of GMs. Does he deserve all the credit? Nope. He does deserve a fair amount though, and you are right, he does usually get more than he deserves.

I dunno if figurehead is the right word, but yeah, I agree GM’s get too much credit and too much blame for how their teams perform, it’s very much a joint effort between a lot of different people. The GM has the final say though, so you can be a JP Ricciardi type and ignore the people that work for you and do whatever you want.

Call me crazy, but I think GMs are just the figureheads for a team’s moves, lots of other guys do the actual work.

iamnotacoolguy – I don’t think he deserves as much credit for their 2004 World Series Title as people give him credit for. Manny Ramirez was on the roster of the Red Sox well before Epstein was even hired by the Red Sox. As were Jonny Damon and V-Teck and Pedro Martinez all of them played major, major roles in the Sox success that year. While I’m sure Epstein deserves some of the credit obviously. I think that he is often given to much credit.

A lot of GM’s would like the to see what they could do with the second highest payroll the last 10 years. It’s tough to evaluate baseball GM’s when the playing field isn’t even close to being even.

I don’t know about the “best GM in baseball”, as it is very subjective. Do his screw ups in Boston include two World Series rings? If not for a monumental September collapse the Sox would have been back in the playoffs last year (again) with a chance to get back to the World Series. It seems to me that the majority of GMs in baseball would like to have his resume.

What kind of drugs are you using? “probably the best GM in baseball” part of the reason Boston didn’t want him back is most of his free agent signings, does Lackey and Crawford ring a bell? Thats over 220mil. That’s not counting his smaller gaffs. He used to be called the boy wonder, but that’s been changed to boy blunder. If the Cubs hold him accountable for his screw ups, he won’t be there long either.

hey how about Garza for Epstein. What a friggin joke the sox are. Lucchino is such a putz, he hated Epstein that much that he’d just let him walk. Probably the best GM in baseball, or close to it.

Not sure the price tag actually is much lower. Given the market Gonzalez and Latos set, Garza should command Turner and something else, though certainly not Castellanos.

You would think that after owning the Red Sox for years, they would want him pitching for them and not against them. As a Rays fan, I wouldn’t mind seeing him going to the central division. Sure beats having to go against him 28 times a year if he were to end up in Boston or New York.
