Picture of the Day: The NHL Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park

Jan 2, 2012, 6:45 PM EDT

The New York Rangers just defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in the fifth annual NHL Winter Classic, which took place this year at Citizens Park Park in Philadelphia. Here’s a pretty cool look at the transformation of the Phillies’ home stadium as U.S. Air Force fighter jets did a fly over during the pre-game ceremonies.

By the way, only 97 days until the Phillies’ home opener against the new-look Miami Marlins on April 9.

neat picture, yes, but I’m glad I watched it on TV as the seat here was better than ANY seat there!

Best event of the year. Brilliant move by the NHL

Even better with HBO 24/7 to supplement!

    Hockey? Who are the Flyers?

Does Criag know about this hockey stuff?

  5. hfasteve - Jan 2, 2012 at 7:51 PM

    Sure they were redbird

Excellent officiating in the last five minutes

    • bbk1000 - Jan 3, 2012 at 6:36 AM

You got that right, man the NHL wanted to give this to Philly big time, almost reminded me of NBA officiating. Thankfully the game ending wasn’t altered by the bad calls, just helped the Rangers rub it in a bit more….

      • bbk1000 - Jan 3, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Folks, if you don’t believe this you don’t know the sport….stick to tiddly winks….

Daniel Briere is overrated…and goal scoring is underrated…or something.

Now that the NY Rangers have played a game in a Base Ball park, Craig and put THEM ahead of the Phillies in his 2012 Monday Morning Power Rankings.

Philly can sell out a stadium/arena for anything except basketball

    So cool, great picture.

    Weenter. Ugh.

It is a cool picture, unfortunately the snow is man made since it was only flurrying in the area most of the day…

    • kopy - Jan 3, 2012 at 8:43 AM

It’s not even man-made snow. It’s sheets of that fake snow-like fabric all rolled out. The NHL is going to great lengths to try to put this game in large Eastern markets even though the weather isn’t guaranteed to cooperate.

Only two F-16’s in the flyover? Lame!

    • bigdicktater - Jan 3, 2012 at 1:05 PM

Maybe the others were all out protecting your sorry, whiny ass.

      • Old Gator - Jan 3, 2012 at 2:29 PM

Neither. It’s the missing wing forward formation. The third pilot is in the penalty box.

  14. cakrywyj - Jan 3, 2012 at 12:15 PM

People complaining about fake snow is proof that there are people that will literally complain about ANYTHING. Who gives a rats ass about if the snow was fake or not?

    • Old Gator - Jan 3, 2012 at 2:31 PM

I do. Every try to make a snowball out of Ivory or Downyflake? You’d get your ass tattooed by the time you packed that crap tight enough to throw it.

      • bbk1000 - Jan 5, 2012 at 5:53 AM

haha, it must be tough to be at a Philly sporting event and not be able to make a snowball….
