Report: Yu Darvish is on his way to Texas

There’s a report from a Japanese paper that, as of last night, Yu Darvish was en route from Japan to Texas. There’s a Google Translate translation of it via Baseball Time in Arlington.

While the Rangers and Darvish are currently in their 30-day window to negotiate a deal, there’s no sense, to the extent much sense can be gleaned from the translation, that a deal is close. Rather, Darvish is trying “to get valuable information before negotiations begin in earnest.”

But it certainly is a long flight just to get a sense of the place. And all indications are that Darvish will sign with the Rangers. So perhaps there will be a press conference while he’s in town.

The Rangers Fan Fest is the weekend of the 13th. You know they would love to have the deal done by then so they could start selling fancy new #11 Darvish jerseys and shirseys that weekend. Of which I’ll buy one the day they’re available…

      What is a shirsey?

Google should update their translation software; that was a tough read.

Eh, the eastbound nonstop from Tokyo to Dallas isn’t that big a deal. Eleven or twelve hours, as the titanium crow flies – and in biz class on a 777 that’s a pretty cushy ride, but I suspect Darvish is one cabin up from the one I use in one of those cryogenic cylinders with the nonstop Moet drip feed. Don’t cry for him. Getting there is half the fun.

Yakyu Baka’s take was that Darvish would not be meeting with team officials on the visit:

Darvish has a guru? And apparently, a talkative one.
