The only explanation I’ve heard that makes any sense-and that’s a stretch-is that the A’s did this to help avoid sanction from the union and MLB over misuse of revenue sharing money. The CBA says revenue sharing money must be spent on player salaries, and without this deal the A’s may have been close to a rebuke like the Marlins got last year.

Probably the A’s also realized that nobody was going to sign to play for them who had any value, and without a decent defense behind their pitchers they’d have nobody to trade away in the next round of rebuilding in 2015, when Air Bud’s Blue Ribbon Stadium Commission would be in their 6th year with no report.
