UPDATE: According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, the deal is done.

6:50 PM: Jon Heyman of reports that the Angels are close to signing Jorge Cantu. While he didn’t specify, it’s same to assume he would get a minor league deal.

Cantu signed with the Padres last winter and began the season in a platoon with Brad Hawpe at first base, but was released in June after batting just .194/.232/.285 with three homers and a .517 OPS over 155 plate appearances. He finished the year with the Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate, hitting .280/.320/.458 with five homers and a .778 OPS in 30 games.

Cantu doesn’t turn 30 until later this month and has shown an ability to hit left-handed pitching in the past, but if all goes as planned for the Angels, he’ll likely open the season in the minors.

“You can’t swing at a pitch that far off the plate!”

But anyway…thank god they got another corner infielder/DH type.

What this is is a vote of no confidence for AAA 1B Efren Navarro, if he’s even still with the organization. The Angels outrighted him in November. I’m not sure if he has enough minor league service time to refuse the assignment or if indeed he did. With both Trumbo and Morales coming off injuries, adding some organizational depth isn’t a bad idea.

I’m guessing that picture was of one of the two high fives Cantu received during his time with the Padres.

      Didn’t photoshop it, I swear.

WTF? I guess they don’t have enough potential corners or dhs? How many do you need?

The final piece is now in place

You wonder why they wasted all that money on Pujols if they were going to sign Cantu anyway.

I’ll bet the signing of Cantu scares the hell out of the Rangers, lets see how they counter this blockbuster move.

      Apparently, by signing Hawpe.

This move has to indicate the Angels plan on moving one of their 1B, 3B, corner OF, or DH’s, maybe even two of them. They sure have a glut now.
