I’m sure that’s correct but to say there is no such thing as protection for a teams best hitter is ridic. I think pujols will lead the majors in intentional walks this year because of who is hitting around him (if trumbo and morales don’t come back strong). you can’t tell me having holliday and berkman behind him gives him the same oppurtinity as hunter and wells

The problem here is that with a good runner on first, a Torii Hunter XBH scores the run. Torii Hunter gets extra base hits more frequently than Albert Pujols hits home runs.

Could also be a horribly broken and dislocated ankle that healed badly, too. Pretty hard to stay in shape on one leg.

option 1. pitch to pujols in 8th inning, tie game, no outs, hope is doesn’t hit a home run. option 2. walk pujols and strike Vernon wells or torii hunter out. easy decision. harder decision when berkman, holliday, and feeese are up after him. that’s protection, ot does exist.

It was more to do with his lack of conditioning and poor workout ethic. He gained about 10-15 lbs and kept himself in terrible shape, which of course hindered his recovery.

There is no such thing as protection for the best hitter in the lineup…why would you give the best hitter better pitches to hit because a lesser hitter (even the 2nd best hitter in the lineup) is hitting after him? You wouldn’t, and teams/pitchers don’t.

As an Angels fan, I would (of course) love to have him back. But I refuse to get excited about any news regarding his progress. He’s had too many setbacks to warrant getting hyped up about a possible return.

they better hope morales and/or trumbo are back. pujols is great but if his only protection is hunter and abreu he will be the most intentionally walked player in baseball
