i thought he was intrested in joining the padres. It would have been a better career move and most likeley would start in the padres rotation. He would have been better off joing the padres

Cookie is NOT a choker, bozosforall. He’s just not very good anymore and has been snakebit with awful injuries for much of his career. He actually pitched the best game for the Rox in the ’07 World Series against these same BoSox, coming off a long layoff from yet another injury in Game 4 (he hadn’t pitched since September) and holding a very powerful (and, might I add, steroid-assisted) Sox lineup to two runs. He’s a good guy, though, tough and serious — not a choker or a fried chicken-and-beer-in-the-clubhouse-during-the-game type.

Yes, way bigger chokers than the ’04 Yanks. A MONTH of choking, as opposed to a WEEK.

Then again, if it’s a playoff choke you want, then look no further than 1978, when the Red Sox choked away the special playoff game. Or the 1986 choke versus the Mets in the World Series. Or if it’s length of time that you want, we can always look at the 86 year WS title drought that belongs to the Red Sox. ANY way you slice it, the Red Sox are the bigger chokers.

Its what is known as a “J.I.C.” deal. As in “Just In Case” he’s any good. A. k. a. a “low-risk — high reward” scenario. Let’s see, “nothing ventured , nothing gained” also fits the situation. In other words, “what the hell have we got to lose? Nothing! So why not?” Here’s hoping!
But, if Cook is taking the place of Maholm or Oswalt in the mix, I’ll really need to buy a new baseball cap.

I mean, it’s just a depth move. He has been good in the past and someone seems to catch lightning in a bottle with some scrap heap pickup like him every year, look at Bartolo. No one’s expecting much but…that’s why it’s a minor league deal.
