I like Oliver because he’s not just a LOOGY. He’s not going to get a three inning save but then again he doesn’t have to automatically come out when they send up a right-handed hitter.

It must be great to be a left-handed pitcher and know you can probably pitch long enough for your grandchildren to see you play. I was at the game Oliver shutout the Padres when Gwynn was going for his 3,000th hit and McGwire was going for his 500th homerun. And he’d already been in the big leagues for more than 5 seasons.

4.5M seems like a lot for a guy who has averaged a 2.52 ERA over the past 3 years in 185 2/3 IP? Along with an 8.4 K/9 and a 2.3 BB/9? Guys like that typically get closer money. This is a pretty good value for one of the better relievers in the game.

I know he is a LHer, but it seems like an awful lot for him. I guess it just goes to show that a dollar doesn’t buy what it used to (or 4.5 million of them in this case).

If you’re going to pay a reliever $4 million, Oliver’s as good a bet as any setup guy.
