Poll: In the wake of the Ryan Madson deal, who’s the biggest sucker?

Jan 11, 2012, 9:39 AM EDT

Former Phillies closer Ryan Madson just signed a deal with the Reds for $8.5 million guaranteed with incentives that could give him a little more.  Earlier this offseason the Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon to be their closer for $50 million guaranteed with incentives that could give him a lot more.

Now, to be clear, I think Papelbon is the better pitcher and the better bet to have a better 2012 season.  But they’re not so different that it justifies a three-year $42 million difference in their contracts.  Someone here is a sucker.  Maybe Madson for not signing someplace earlier. Maybe the Phillies for totally misreading the closer market.  Hard to say.

So you say.  Here’s a poll.  Vote early and often. Assuming the poll lets you. Not sure it does:

Ruben. no question. Seriously, the single most irritating thing that GM’s do to me is pay for saves and thinking that the 9th inning is sacred somehow. Honestly I loved papelbon and I was actually pretty damn sad at thinking that Shipping out to Boston will not play when the doors open in the 9th, but when I saw the money spent I literally laughed. I loved the guy, and he did great for the Sox but seeing him play the past couple of years he has had weird stretches where all he does is throw fastballs in hittable areas and the balls go a long LONG way. There were a ton of times where the 380 feet out to right field bailed his ass out, and he suddenly became a scary pitcher to watch. I think he’ll be great for half of this deal, but the fact that a CLOSER was paid for this much money is goddamn crazy

That’s why Craig is the Master. Honestly folks, it’s all in good fun. Whenever I see stuff like that I have a chuckle and move on. I don’t even bother commenting directly (after all that’s why it’s called BAITING!).
