Rays, Maddon closing in on an extension

As we passed along yesterday, the Rays and Joe Maddon are talking contract extension.  Marc Topkin updates that report this morning, telling us that they are getting really close and that an announcement could happen at any time.

Maddon has led the Rays to the playoffs in the AL East three out of the last four years. But shhhh! Don’t tell anyone that. It totally screws up that whole “no one besides the Red Sox or the Yankees have a shot in that division” narrative that people in Toronto and Baltimore love so much.

He’s very focused on this extension, how that he takes his Men’s One a Day 50+.

Biggest Rays signing this offseason. They need to lock him up for life. No one works a roster like JoMa

    16 Yankees
    9 Red Sox
    2 Orioles
    3 Rays
    0 Blue Jays
4 Wild card won outside the division

I love reading your work, Craig. It used to be that I read Neyer everyday without missing an article, but now it’s your stuff I follow most closely. However, your head is buried in the sand on this one, and it puzzles me considering how sledgehammer-on-forehead obvious it is that this is an action-worthy problem.

Hey! Don’t spoil the narrative! Or something…

Not entirely fair to the Rays who did not become a franchise until 1998.

Well, then let’s include the Tigers, who were in the AL East until the Rays bumped them to the Central. That’s easy enough since they were also shut out of the playoffs.

I concur with the above comment that the Rays should just sign the guy for life. He’s awesome.
