Sweeney has a .700 OPS against righties, Aviles and McDonald .800 against lefties. And Sweeney's finally going to a good hitter's park (though not a total bandbox if you're a lefty). I'd say .700-.750.

Considering what Boston got out of RF last year (.670 OPS), that's an improvement.

Rumor has it the Sox simply couldn't match Kuroda's price tag, and Oswalt is similarly out of reach. Oh well. Unless you're the Yankees, you can only buy so much.

That doesn't seem like much of a platoon in right field. Unless Sweeney unexpectedly mashes it could combine for an OPS of around .650-.700.

True, but the two pitchers the Yankees acquired still leaves them with a huge advantage relative to the Sox.

They'd better get busy, even though there isn't much left out there.

Smoltz 2.0?

That's quite an exaggeration. Oswalt isn't NEARLY as old or as past his prime as Smoltz was.

Not saying that Oswalt is the ideal choice for the Sox...he would be a big risk given his bad back for the asking price, but the Smoltz comparison is imperfect.

I don't really know what to think of the Sox at this point. On one hand, Pedroia, Gonzo, and Ellsbury are among the league's best. On the other, the Crawford contract almost makes me wonder if Theo didn't leave the new Cubs to join the actual Cubs. They lost an All Star closer and replaced him with a younger but not as solid one.

The main thing is their rotation still needs fixing, and now that the Yankees have addressed that same problem methinks the Sox will have to get to work. The only problem is with what the Yankees just did there isn't a lot left for them. Oswalt would be Smoltz 2.0 and Edwin Jackson is Edwin Jackson. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens now.
