This guy is going to be the latterday incarnation of Orestes Destrade for the Feesh - at three or four times the price. Oh whoopee. Maybe they can adjust that stupid conniptual art fiasco out beyond center field to start jiggin on any ball that gets hit further than 350 feet. If they wait for home runs in that Yellowstone Caldera of an outfield, it's going to rust solid in the Macondo humidity while it waits for a legitimate excuse to make a fool of itself.

Davenport said that, in his opinion, the best comparable player to Cespedes is Adam Jones. The Orioles are already either actively shopping or at least listening to offers for Jones both due to the talent he would bring back and to avoiding the question of whether he would sign an extension in Baltimore.

So if the Birds are really interested in Cespedes and willing to outbid the other teams for his services, it brings up some interesting questions about the team's plans. Would they trade Jones for several prospects, sign Cespedes (likely for significantly less than a Jones extension would cost) and live through a year or two of his adjustment pains to, hopefully, end up with a net positive in team talent overall?

That's something to seriously consider, especially if the scouts brought back good reports when the team scouted him.

I think Soriano is the better comp. I don't see any way he has Pena's patience. I'm guessing Cespedes will walk like 40 times in a good year.
Still, if he's a really good fielder, a .260/.320/.500 line with 20-30 homers is very useful.

If Clay Davenport is right on this kids numbers, he sounds like another Alfonso Soriano. Please Cubs, do not get involved with this kid, let Miami have him. Miami owner will find out not to listen to Ozzie, I guess he will learn from his own mistakes. One of the reasons why the White Sox let Ozzie go.
