From ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark comes word that the Oakland A’s have signed veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon to a one-year major league contract.

No word yet on any of the financial details.

Colon was courted recently by Arizona and spoke to the Yankees at one point about a reunion, but he settled on a place that should provide him an opportunity to post consistently strong numbers.

The A’s home stadium, the O.co Coliseum, saw the fifth-fewest home runs in all of baseball last year and ranked 20th in runs scored. Colon threw a four-hit shutout at Oakland in May. The 38-year-old had 4.00 ERA in 164 1/3 total innings for New York.

I wonder if Beane has Moneyball playing in an endless loop in his office or something. This is such a Billy Beane move.

Darn! I was hoping that the Red Sox would sign the old timer. He should do well playing in Oakland. His road record will probably be poor.

Sox need to do something soon. Their rotation is in disarray and they need a plan B for Youkalis (one that can hit) & Bard.

The A’s just signed Colon for give or take around $2MM for 2012. God only knows what the Red Sox management team is thinking. They have signed or at the very least appear to be trying to sign a “boatload of refugees” from the hospital ward.

Believe me I get the whole low risk thing. But a guy like Colon after proving that he still could help a team should have been real high on the Red Sox list. Considerating the back end of “their” pitching situation no way they shouldn’t have signed he for that kind of money.

The A’s are so down-market right now. After Bartolo gets blown up on the road a few times, or wilts in the late summer sun, the stands will be completely empty for his starts, if he’s still healthy enough to waddle out to the mound by then. Hopefully by then the kids will be up from Sacramento to pitch a few times. The A’s will lose 95 games this year, and look bad doing it.

Colon was courted by the D-Backs but he was food courted by the A’s. Dude likes to eat. Now he can work out with Kung Fu Panda’s personal trainer in Frisco. I bet both these dudes come in at 3 bills!

The A’s aren’t selling jeans; they’re selling muumuus.
