The player doesn’t really have any leverage. If he doesn’t sign, he goes back to Japan and the rangers are refunded their posting fee, with plenty of other options to improve their team and with at least $60M in their pockets that they planned on spending this year for Darvish.

The player has the leverage. Because of the crazy posting fee, it allows him to know their level of interest and commitment. I’d venture to guess it will be a 5 yr deal with a mutual option for year 6, and a high priced team option for a 7th year. Maybe 5 @ 15 per yr avg, option of like 23 year 6 and something absurd like 28 for year 7, in case he’s beyond belief.

Darvish can push for 5 years all he wants, but if this falls through, he goes back to Japan and if he is posted again next year the team that wins the bid will STILL want 6 years….and if he gets 5 then he would be the same age when he hits FA as he would signing for 6 with Texas….only, he would make less money during those 6 years.

There is just no scenario where it makes sense for Darvish to not get a deal done.
