If Pineiro’s shoulder is better than Blanton’s elbow, he’ll probably be a better pitcher. If not, well, it won’t cost them much to find out.

Agreed on insurance for Blanton, I don’t trust his elbow and neither should Ruben. I’m not claiming to be the smartest bloke on the planet but this depth could help with Blanton’s uncertainty and if god forbid Vance Worley has the dreaded sophomore slump. All in all, good move.

That’s one way of looking at it. Or to fill a spot currently held by a traded away minor league pitcher. They’ll need depth to trade successfully. If need be.

Kendrick was arbitration eligible. It would have been stupid to non-tender him. After all, he is a useful, if limited, pitcher. So, they agreed upon a 1 year deal to avoid arbitration at a salary that was pretty much in line with most estimates of what his arbitration award would have been. Those criticizing the Kendrick deal simply don’t understand how the arbitration process works.

It is hard to compare the Piniero and Kendrick situations. They are similar pitchers (ages aside), neither can strike anyone out, neither walks a lot of guys, Piniero typically has higher GB rates…..but, the Phillies options were to sign Kendrick, go to arbitration with him (in which case they very well have paid him more), try to trade him (he really doesn’t have much value, so this would have been a tough option to pursue), or just non-tender him…..teams just don’t give up useful players for free.

This is Amaro forming pcs of a contingency plan. That’s what I see Joel Pineiro being. If they must make trades to get the offense thumping, this adds flexibility to do so.

Yeah. Kyle Kendrick’s 3.5 million dollar, 1 year deal seems to be getting a lot of bad coverage. The guy wins games, is never injured, and can come out of the pen and spot start for the Phillies. I’ll take Kendrick at that salary compared to a lot of other pitchers.

Paying KK is called taking care of your employees. Will he bring 3.5 million of value to the staff this year? Probably not, but he has absolutely brought that value to the team throughout his Phillies career. Back on point, this is a good signing for the Phillies. They seem to have signed a bunch of veteran pitchers this off season to provide organizational depth.
