There is nothing debatable about Lefty O’Doul and the hall of fame. He had 3,600 career PA’s. He had a nice .945 OPS, but in possibly the best offensive environment in baseball history: the Baker Bowl in late 20′s, early 30s. Everyone hit .330 in those days (35 players qualified for the batting title in 1930 and hit .330 or better!).

Putting Lefty O’Doul in the hall would be like putting Matt Holliday in the hall for what he did by the end of 2009. He was a good player for a very short period of time. How good he was is exaggerated by his era and ballpark.

If he makes the team, he makes the team, meaning the guys who didn’t were not as good as he was. There really is no “taking up a roster spot” in this situation. If he were just rubber stamped onto the roster after having played there for years, then I could see your point. This is a minor league contract with a new team. No misplaced loyalty there.

I like that Jamie is going to get a shot to go out on his own terms.

The hall of AWESOMENESS!! was created just after Lefty O’Doul was deemed not Hall of Fame worthy (still debatable). Lefty, much like Jamie Moyer, was AWESOMENESS!! epitomized.

He’s not taking up a roster spot. He’s signed on a minor league contract with an invite to ST. I would guess that he’s got a verbal agreement that this is a tryout, if he can’t cut it he just retires at the end of ST.

pedro – The Hall of AWESOMENESS has a much different set of criteria that is considered for induction.

Such criteria is not apparent on the back of a baseball card. Elias is still struggling in their pursuits to identify and quantify Awesome, at its basic level, similar to the CERN scientists pursuits in confirming the existence of the Higgs boson particle, thought to endow other particles with mass.

What we do know, is that Moyer is a first ballot shoe-in soon after he (dare I say) retires.

And one of the best parts of the HoA is the fact that there are no performance enhancing debates. You can’t cheat to be awesome. You just are. No questions.

Jaime Moyer went 7-4 with a 5.15 ERA that year on a team that included Ron Cey, Davey Lopes, and Gary Mathews Sr.

Jamie Moyer has much to offer the Rockies. It just that it might be as a mentor, showing young Rockies’ pitchers and prospects how to think, work and approach hitters. In that regard, he might prove to be a big (minor league contract) signing.

Coming off Tommy John surgery and being 49 years old, his ability to get big-league hitters out might be severely compromised, even as a soft-tossing pitcher.

Hard to root against Moyer. The Rockies know this is low risk with both tangible and intangible upside, but they also know it’s more the latter.
