Darvish won’t hit free agency until after the 2014 season. He could be posted each year before that…but every year he stays in Japan likely means he’ll be one more year away from free agency in MLB.

Another factor is he might miss out on playing for a team that is the 2012 WS Champs. If I’m Ryan, that’s a big part of the negotiation.

Well, the Rangers have been to the Series twice in a row and lost them as we know. And both times, I walked away feeling they needed to upgrade their starting pitching to get them over the hump. Their offense is plenty good enough, and it was their bullpen that failed in Game Six last year, but they could use the pitcher that Darvish is projected to be, especially after losing Cliff Lee and CJ Wilson, neither of whom were strong in those two Series for the Rangers.

I understand the point of view that says Hamilton and Cruz are both fragile, and at least for the next few years Prince would be more durable, but I think the Rangers betting in the neighborhood of $ 100M on Darvish tells us that they also feel they need a top starter immediately.

But if that $51M comes back at the end of Wednesday I expect the only question will be how soon does Boras call Nolan.

I heard on Dallas sports radio this morning that Darvish’s contract with the Fighters is up in 2 years. Thus, he could be driving a hard bargain with the Rangers. Look at it from Yu’s perspective:

He takes 70-90 million over 5-6 years now. The Fighters get 51 million as a posting fee.

2 years from now, he is 27 and has no posting fee. He could conceivably get 120-140 million and cut the fighters out of the process.

From the team’s perspective, they are paying X. This year, X = Salary + Posting fee. Two years from now, X = Salary. Yu is smart to push for max money now, because if he can keep up his performance in Japan over the next two years, he will get much more as a free agent. 27 isn’t all that old either.

Nolan Ryan knows he holds the cards here. He’s got a proven team, which he’s made better in the off season. He’s got his legendary name and huge market in Texas. IMO, Darvish needs Ryan more than Ryan needs Darvish.

I think Darvish will have alot of pressure to get it done. The Ham Fighters want that 51.7 mil, his agents want their commission, and he wants that big money. It’s a risky move to wait another year, what if he has a bad year, what if he gets hurt… He’s got alot of guaranteed money sitting right in front of him and alot of ppl are counting on their money based on him signing.

Yeah, posting fee is refunded if an agreement with the player is not reached. If they don’t get it done they will go after fielder and maybe try to get Oswalt.

Not sure what you are talking about. If they don’t agree on a contract the posting fee is returned to the Rangers. They get every single penny back.
