Picture of the Day: Yu Darvish, Texas Ranger

Jan 20, 2012, 9:31 PM EDT

Yu Darvish was officially introduced as a member of the Texas Rangers during a press conference earlier this evening in the “Hall of Fame room” at the Ballpark in Arlington. According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, an estimated 200 members of the Japanese media were on hand for the occasion.

Below is a picture of Darvish with his new No. 11 uniform flanked by Rangers manager Ron Washington and the team’s general manager Jon Daniels.

The press conference was brutally bland and lacked any sort of energy. Not to mention Darvish appeared indifferent to the proceedings and constantly flinched about like a gawky, lanky 15 yr old boy

Ever thought that perhaps he couldn’t understand what everyone was saying, and thus didn’t know how to react to anything?

Same thing happened when the Twins had their press conference for Tsuyoshi Nishioka. He just sat there and didn’t do anything unless his interpreter spoke to him.

I was going to say I agree with lyon – I get that the whole conference would have been hard to have interest in giving he wouldn’t necessarily follow much of it.

I was going to say however that he doesn’t look thrilled to be there in the photo – he could at least have shown some energy there, but when you look harder, none of the three look that happy to be there. You would think Daniels, who had been watching this guy for ages would have at least cracked a smile during the official photos that I got the guy, and i am really happy about it, and he is going to be great.

Maybe the whole proceedings and the contract talks just wore everyone out.

He’s saving all his energy up for the season!

    That’s a big man.

Why do I see Stanley, Jim, & the Temp when I look at that picture? I presume Michael is taking the picture for this year’s Dundees?

They’ll smile perhaps a bit more when they’ve all slept for a week.

    • Old Gator - Jan 21, 2012 at 1:52 AM

Darvish, at least, will smile a lot when he gets his first ridiculous paycheck.

complete waste of money. the list of “big” Japanese pitching failures just increased by one.

  6. glink123 - Jan 21, 2012 at 3:07 AM

He’s thrown 1200 innings, and 55 complete games, before the age of 26. His arm is gonna fall off.

    • paperlions - Jan 21, 2012 at 11:35 AM

He’s been pitching in the Japanese league since he was 18. If you add up the pitching MLB pitchers have done in college, the minors, instructional leagues, and the majors by 25. You will get a similar amount of work.

He’s the real deal. Probably the second-best Japanese player to come stateside after Ichiro.

    • hustleandflomax - Jan 21, 2012 at 10:19 AM

Dominating Japanese hitters is one thing, but dominating MLB hitters is a completely different story. They aren’t all Ichiro over there, in case you didn’t know.

    Dude looks happy.

    • mirmz - Jan 21, 2012 at 3:46 AM

/sarcasm. And to those who don’t have a sense of humor – at all – fuck off.

  9. hustleandflomax - Jan 21, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Anybody that tries to make any kind of prediction whatsoever about what kind of success Darvish will have is talking out of their ass. Nobody freakin’ knows. Matsuzaka was supposed to be the Second Coming, for cryin’ out loud.

For the record, there are TONS of photos from this event where Yu, JD, and the homeless guy on the left were ALL smiling….just not for this photo…probably the reason it was used here…

    • paperlions - Jan 21, 2012 at 11:36 AM

Yeah, it’s the black guy that is homeless, funny. Ha.

You guys are all forgeting one important part of the signing process. Nolan Ryan is making this call. Do you really think he spends 100 million on a gut that MIGHT be good. Nothing that he has done since taking over as the Rangers president is less than remarkable. This guy is the real deal.
