Not sure if you are aware of it but Bard is a "Super 2" he doesn't become a FA until the 2016 season. If the Sox trade him say at the 2012 trade deadline that still gives whoever the acquiring team is 3 plus years of team control.

And if he doesn't stick as a starter with the Sox would make him expendable at the deadline in my opinion with Melancon and Bailey in camp,

While I agree that trading Bard is a plausible idea and would bring a haul of prospects or could be used in a John Danks trade, I think your second point answers your question. If the Sox were thinking of dealing him, they would have pushed for a longer deal. A Daniel Bard who is traded near the deadline with a couple months left on a deal is worth significantly less than a Daniel Bard with 1.5 or 2.5 years left on a deal at a hell of a price.

I have a comment in general about Bard and his future with the Red Sox.

Has anyone thought or even considered that after this season the Red Sox will be looking to trade Bard? Here are a couple of reason why that thought has crept into my mind:
1st) At least to me it doesn't appear that the Red Sox have a lot of confidence in Bard sticking as a starter. Since they traded their starting SS and are apparently in "hot" pursuit of a starter be it Oswalt, or if they pursue Jackson or whoever.
2nd) Why not during this period between offering arbitration and exchanging figures weren't the 2 sides able to work out a 2 year deal? That's certainly not long team which I realize the Sox are reticent to extend to relief pitchers.
3rd) The Red Sox as best I can tell at least it would appear seem to think Melancon and Bailey are the "guys" for the 8th and 9th innings going forward. Both are under team control for several more years. Much longer than Bard.

All that just make me think Bard is a short timer for the Red Sox.

Forget about the minutiae of his role. What's important is they have a very young, extremely talented arm for one and a half million bucks. Because the RS don't have any pitching, this guy will have the real opportunity to succeed at multiple roles this year as starter, closer and late inning relief (this is where I see him blossoming).
