The Orioles don’t really have a better option at designated hitter* or first base ready to go, and since he can at least stand at third base and in the outfield as well as play first he’ll provide some versatility. If Reynolds struggles defensively at third or Chris Davis doesn’t develop at first he can slide in, and give those players days off while also allowing Matt Wieters to DH and take a few additional days off behind the plate.

*Before people pull muscles to throw out Reynolds’ name, he is the Opening Day third baseman, and last year in half of a season he was essentially twice as bad defensively as any other full season. Both using statistics and eyes (along with his reputation).

He’s cheap, hits righties well, and has the power to pop a few on the short right field flag court at Oriole Park. It isn’t Prince Fielder, but that was never going to happen.
