Seems like an odd signing to me. Left handed hitter. Fast, but doesn’t steal bases at a great rate or play a good left field. No arm. Contact hitter, no power or walks.

Was the first name that came to mind Juan Pierre or Scott Podsednik? They’re both ticketed to Allentown.

Keep in mind I found HUNDREDS of these cakes, but few passed the SFW acid test, though almost all were AWESOME. I’d have replied much sooner but I was looking at a lot of naked-lady cakes…for purposes of accuracy, of course, not just because they were AWESOME!

D.Brown hasn’t shown anything in the big show except that maybe we should have traded him. He isn’t a good fielder, not a good hitter, and his base running leaves a lot to be desired.

JP has always been easy to root for. The guy hustles on every play, works on his weaknesses and appreciates where he is. He’s never been great, but it hasn’t been for lack of effort or attitude. Didn’t Ozzie say last year that he’d “take a whole team of Juan Pierres?” (Of course, that’d be stupid. I mean, who would pitch?)

True. platoon is meant for defensive term of same position. Not sure what a correct term would be, but you get the idea.

But doesn’t that imply that Pierre only play against lefties? His OBP against righties last year was sub-300. And if he is to only play against lefties then his platoon spot would be in left field. Moving around the batting order isn’t really platooning (at least in how I am familiar with the term).

Look, it’s a minor league deal and it doesn’t matter to me in the least. He could still have some value to a team I suppose. But you’re argument/scenario writes him onto the ML roster and with signification playing time. Which could turnout to be the case. But maybe not. More importantly (and less wonderfully), now Dom Brown is further buried in LF purgatory.

plus I am platooning the leadoff spot, not left field. The phils are an ageing team and like the last few years, I’m sure we will have our fair share of 15 day DL stints.

I never said they would play everyday. Rollins could leadoff on right handed days and Pierre on left handed days. Rollins is of course the everyday player. Pierre won’t be.

But how much would the “platoon” matter with Rollins and Pierre? In the original scenario by illcomm, they would both play everyday so they’d both still be facing lefties and righties. Even if you swap them in the leadoff position they still would hit somewhere else. Not to mention they play different positions defensively which, at least mostly, mitigates the value of a platoon.

The proper platoon comparison would be Pierre vs other left field candidates.

I agree that the phils need a new young true leadoff hitter, but that wing be this year. If rollins is out at all, at least Pierre could be there full time. The only other option we have is Victorino and he is a good two hole hitter, not a leadoff guy at all.

also on rollins. that .350 on base is for 2011 only. the year before he had a .368 vs lefties and a .297 vs righties. that platoon doesn’t take much into account for history of rollins. bottom line is he should not be leading off. pride trumps all though

lol that’s really weird. since 2008 his obp vs lefties is .388 .414 .390 .430. prior to that his highest was .361 in 2004. A..398 OBP in 577 PA since 2008. don’t know what to make of that really.
