I wonder how much the ballplayer with an inflated sense of self-worth might have to do with it. As in, an agent might be advising his client to take a deal, but the player might be telling him to hold out for more. It’s the kind of thing we wouldn’t find out until well after the fact, if ever. That said, every now and then we hear a story about a ballplayer turning down money on to play for less later on. It could be a factor in the Madson-Phillies breakdown early in the offseason.

Not saying it absolves any bad contracts by Boras (or any agent), but it’s not too hard to imagine

Boras only hit .250 this winter and in the summer, he will be unable to sign his high draft picks to contracts that greatly exceed scale. All in all, he had a rotten year.

I mean, he got the awful-bodied Prince Fielder 9 years and $214 million in a market full of first basemen, with a Hall of Famer at the same position in free agency and still in his late prime, which kind of makes up for everything else.

I mean, Albert didn’t set any contract records. C.J. Wilson made a lot loss than he hoped.

The Bruce Chen deal was a big win. Getting Willie Bloomquist anything, much less a two year deal, is a win.

Edwin Jackson was hoping for a multi-year deal, but he’d been on six teams by season’s close and never looked close to reaching his potential.

Honestly I’d say it was a pretty great off-season.

But, but, Boras = Svengali! How could he possibly not swindle any GM who comes under his spell?

But seriously, all this crap about The Wonderfulness That Is Scott Boras is just that — crap. So its the crap about how certain GMs (read, Mike Rizzo) are suckers for Boras. He has to deal with the market like any other agent. He may be better at it than most, but it’s hard to tell from all his self-promotion.
