According to Arnold's Bodybuilding for Men (1984) the average person can mange about 7 to 10 pounds/year. Schwarzenegger (1984) contends that with supplements, intensive training, and a dedicated diet a person could exceed this, but there is considerable risk of injury. So, yeah, I think if you believe that wimp Schwarzenegger, 15 pounds is a lot.

Oh, and I think Brett Cecil will be confirmed next time around. He really did lose 30+ pounds, after all. Hughes still needs to be confirmed, and although Hall has lost weight, he probably needs to sign with a team that will confirm his shape before we can say he’s BSOHL.

I’ve added Wilson, but I didn’t think Lincecum counted because he only lost the weight that he gained just for 2011 and didn’t have in 2010. But I don’t feel strongly about either case, and this list isn’t exactly my sole intellectual property. Opinions encouraged, and weighted by thumb ratio.

I don’t think Freeman’s superior defense over Teixera gets him the starting nod. Maybe after this year. And yes, Yankee Fans, I acknowledge that Teixera is widely considered very good at 1B, but Freeman is also very good, and much younger.

Also, notice we have 6 first baseman on this list? Does anyone else think this is weird?

The bar is not all that high for Fielder. BSOHL could still be morbidly obese.

I think the BSOHL requirement you propose is too complicated. If you make kopy’s official BSOHL list then you get the bonus, if not, time for some more P90X.

In other news, it seems we’re on pace for every 1B in the majors (minus of course Prince Fielder and the one Achilles-ed Ryan Howard) to be in the BSOHL. Howard will probably earn the title around mid to late May, and Fielder–well–let’s just say it’s a good thing he doesn’t have one of those clauses in his contract.

Could a team put a BSOHL clause in a contract? I’m sure it is impossible due to a union issue, but it seems like professional athletes should be held accountable for their conditioning by their employers. Either bonus for BSOHL by some tangible measure (BMI? Weight? Speed? some combination?) or some fat-camp requirement for failing to be in the BSOHL 1 month prior to Spring training.
