Scott Boras says Jason Varitek “is deliberating what he wants to do”

With spring training right around the corner Jason Varitek doesn’t have a job and agent Scott Boras said yesterday that the 40-year-old catcher “is deliberating what he wants to do.”

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe makes it clear that “there’s no room on the Red Sox roster for him” after they signed Kelly Shoppach to platoon with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and speculates that Varitek is pondering retirement after 14 seasons.

Ivan Rodriguez also remains unsigned, so Varitek may not even be a team’s main emergency target if a catcher gets hurt during spring training. Varitek hit .221 with a .300 on-base percentage and .423 slugging percentage in 68 games last season, which is actually right around average production for a catcher, but he also threw out just 14 percent of steal attempts as teams ran wild on him.

Time to hang up the mask, Tek, and start thinking about your future coaching/managing gigs.

He could try Celebrity Boxing like Jose Canseco, but of course, they would need to allow him to wear his full arsenal of protective gear. That’s how he rolls…

It’s required when the guy you’re fighting is on roids.

I can hear the ring announcer now….

“In this corner wearing a catchers mask, chest protector shin guards and sporting a C tattooed on his chest and brass knuckles in his underoos, .. the pride of all points north and east of Hartford CT, .. CAPTAIN SUCKER PUNCH!”

      • drewzducks - Feb 6, 2012 at 6:26 PM

And in the other corner wearing white Hamburglar gloves, pink lip gloss and too many track marks to count…A-Roid !

You gotta get past hating him because he’s beautiful.

So long, Jason. You’re going to make an excellent coach someday.

Jason’s had a very nice 14 year career with the Red Sox made himself $65MM plus it’s time to hang it up and enjoy life outside of baseball. Good luck.

I agree with its to move into the coaching faze of his career. I know its hard to admit, and its got to suck to not feel wanted by the red sox after all he has done for them. But it is time. They have obviously moved on, its your turn Jason. Take the coaching offer and keep your dignity.
I think he would make a great manager some day.

You can’t blame anything on the Sox with this one, they carried him for the last two years. Even the king of horseshit, Boras can’t put a upward spin on signing Varitek. As with Posada, it’s time to grab your hat and get into the wind.

    And in other irrelevant news……..

……Boras said he is in the best shape of his life.

      Boras or Capt Sucker Punch?

  9. aceshigh11 - Feb 6, 2012 at 10:31 PM

Did bozosforall finally get banned, or institutionalized?

Time was he would’ve flocked to this like stink to a monkey.

    • patsfiend - Feb 11, 2012 at 2:15 PM

He’s too busy bringing his stink to the Pats boards. Please note, not only is he a Yankees fan, he’s a Lakers fan, too. And, he’s too much of a wimp to even HAVE an NFL allegiance, since he’s only vocal about things when his front-runner teams are strong.
