Madonna is gonna play Yankee Stadium in September

Feb 7, 2012, 8:47 AM EDT

madonna

In case you didn’t get enough of her at the Super Bowl, never fear, you can see Madonna at another sporting venue: Yankee Stadium on September 6th.

The Yankees will be in the middle of an 10-game road trip then, so it won’t interfere. And I hear that Mystique and Aura will stay behind to be backup dancers.

But for all of the crap Madonna got leading up to the Super Bowl — and for as bizarre and off-putting her public persona has become — I ain’t gonna hate. We all have guilty pleasures in life. As a guy who came of age around the time Madonna was exploding back in the 1980s, I am not ashamed to say that I’m a fairly big fan. I have a fairly lengthy Madonna playlist on my iPod and I don’t care who knows it.

Well, maybe I care a little. So, no biggie, but if you can keep it under your hat a bit, that’d probably be best.  I’ll be over here listening to deep cuts from “True Blue.”

Sure, Madonna is all well and good, just so long as you can pretend the last 15 or so years haven’t happened.

    • kiwicricket - Feb 7, 2012 at 9:50 AM

Please tack on 5+ years to that statement.

    • Stacey - Feb 7, 2012 at 10:14 AM

Ray of Light is one of her best albums and it came out in 1998. Do the math, son.

      • kiwicricket - Feb 7, 2012 at 10:17 AM

Clearly not a fan of Ray of Light, madame.

      • daisycutter1 - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:09 PM

Ray of Light was fine back then, but it really hasn’t aged well. Much like the singer herself.

    • bigleagues - Feb 7, 2012 at 4:55 PM

On the day following the announcement of Roger Waters performing THE WALL at FENWAY PARK, you author a post about a relatively underwhelming Madonna show at Yankees Stadium?

Didn’t you allude to GF troubles the other day? Start with just saying NO to Madonna posts.

  2. crispybasil - Feb 7, 2012 at 8:59 AM

Where’s Bane when you need him?

    • sdelmonte - Feb 7, 2012 at 8:59 AM

      In ADR with Christopher Nolan?

  3. proudlycanadian - Feb 7, 2012 at 9:00 AM

Everyones taste in music is very personal Craig; however, there was a lot of better music than Madonna back then. She just doesn’t have and never has had a singing voice that I want to hear.

    • proudlycanadian - Feb 7, 2012 at 9:22 AM

She was quite ordinary. I would never go out of my way to see her perform.

  4. sdelmonte - Feb 7, 2012 at 9:01 AM

Hmmm. That is opening night of football season. Which will take place across the river this year, with the Giants hosting. Is this timed so that the Yankees can steal some headlines from the other sport?

If the Boss were alive, I wouldn’t put it past him. I get the feeling he was unhappy that the Yankees didn’t find a way to win the Super Bowl, and the World Cup and the Tour de France.

    • Lukehart80 - Feb 7, 2012 at 10:26 AM

The Boss is alive, he’s even got a new album coming out in a few weeks. I would think someone so knowledgeable about New Jersey would know that.

      • deathmonkey41 - Feb 7, 2012 at 2:21 PM

I’m from New Jersey and I try to forget about Bruce Springsteen

  5. hep3 - Feb 7, 2012 at 9:03 AM

True Blue? I hope you are talking about the Dodgers deepest cut: one Frank McCourt.

  6. kiwicricket - Feb 7, 2012 at 9:56 AM

I have recently purchased livestock more appealing than Madonna.

    • cur68 - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:41 AM

You guys and your sheep *shakes head*…merino’s, right?

      • kiwicricket - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:36 PM

        4million people-40million sheep. It’s inevitable.

  7. pisano - Feb 7, 2012 at 9:59 AM

Her day has come and gone, she needs to get a clue, it’s OVER!!!

  8. deathmonkey41 - Feb 7, 2012 at 10:08 AM

Italians Do it Better? I thought that old broad was British!

    • WhenMattStairsIsKing - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Her name’s Madonna Ciccone. Born and raised in Michigan!

      • deathmonkey41 - Feb 7, 2012 at 2:26 PM

I know stairs- just poking fun at her pretentiousness. I like the “Johnny Depp British” description, but she started the stupid bogus accent when Johnny was just a wee lad arresting 20-something teenagers on 21 Jump Street. So, I think it is him that speaks Madonna British and not the other way around.

      • Utley's Hair - Feb 7, 2012 at 6:24 PM

One transplanted hack in denial is as good as another.

    • Utley's Hair - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:38 AM

      She’s Johnny Depp British.

  9. brewcrewbombers - Feb 7, 2012 at 10:33 AM

i will hate. the best part of Madonna’s show was Cee Lo, and the high wire guy.

  10. dsimp724 - Feb 7, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Any truth that cyndi lauper and debbie gibson are the warm up acts

    • Utley's Hair - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Tiffany is leading off, followed by either Milli or Vanilli.

    • kiwicricket - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:28 PM

      Belinda Carlisle is on deck

      • Utley's Hair - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:38 PM

What about Susanna Hoffs? And Bananarama?

      • kiwicricket - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:51 PM

Benched. Pat Benatar is in the line-up

      • cur68 - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:51 PM

        Anne Murray is Ms Lucky.

      • kiwicricket - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:53 PM

Sinead O’Connor is also playing. She looks like she might be good at sports.

      • deathmonkey41 - Feb 7, 2012 at 2:29 PM

I would kill everyone of you if Susanna Hoffs had asked me to- no offense. She was so damn cute though.

  11. dsimp724 - Feb 7, 2012 at 10:47 AM

Well atleast cashman wont have to worry about having to get tickets for his psycho girlfriends

  12. Jonny 5 - Feb 7, 2012 at 10:54 AM

    The 1980’s???

I would have rather circle jerked along with The Circle Jerks than listen to Madonna. Craig, all I can do is shake my head….
The list is endless of bands better than Madonna in the 1980’s. ENDLESS!!!

    • Craig Calcaterra - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:17 AM

Yeah, too bad that back in the 80s we had to choose only one artist to listen to and then not listen to any of the others. It made things so hard.

      • Jonny 5 - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:39 AM

I did listen to Madonna many times, but never on purpose. The list is ENDLESS I said. That doesn’t equal “one band” it equals an infinite number of bands!!! I’m sorry Craigy but Madonna was the choice of my little sister, along with New kids on the block.. :P Oh oh oh oh oh..

  13. dsimp724 - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:05 AM

September is a long way away. I hope the tickets are refundable just incase

  14. WhenMattStairsIsKing - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:06 AM

Wow, way to use a picture of Madonna 20 years ago.

    • Craig Calcaterra - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:18 AM

You’d prefer more recent ones? Ugh, not me.

      • Utley's Hair - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:34 AM

One from the “Like a Prayer” era would’ve been much better.

By the way, why is HBT so far down on the NBCSports page all of a sudden?

      • WhenMattStairsIsKing - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:23 PM

For 53, she looks great. However, maybe a recent picture would remind HBT readers of what to expect if they were to buy tickets.

      • kiwicricket - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:40 PM

Great? Compared to what? It’s all relative.

      • WhenMattStairsIsKing - Feb 7, 2012 at 1:26 PM

Great compared to a lot of 53 year olds out there that I see. She’s fit, her face isn’t any worse than it’s ever been, and she can still pull off outfits a lot of women half her age can’t.

It’s too easy to be brutally critical of her.

  15. steveohho - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:07 AM

“I like her early stuff. You know, ‘Lucky Star’, ‘Borderline’ – but once she got into her ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ phase, I don’t know, I tuned out.”

    • nategearhart - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:59 AM

I think you used the only quote from that scene that isn’t NSFW. Well done.

  16. yankeesfanlen - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:12 AM

Such poor taste hating on Madonna. Leave her alone! (And her ex too!)

    • Utley's Hair - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:37 AM

Come on, Len. That hookup has to have made you wanna give up on the Save Ferris campaign for ARoid. Even just a little…?

      • yankeesfanlen - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:31 PM

        Never!

  17. joneil66 - Feb 7, 2012 at 11:22 AM

Ironically, that is the same night the New York Giants are scheduled to host the NFL Season Opener.

  18. greynraney - Feb 7, 2012 at 12:47 PM

Maybe this time she can be bothered to sing live – unlike the Super Bowl.

  19. xmatt0926x - Feb 7, 2012 at 1:31 PM

As someone in their late 30’s, I hate to keep seeing the “the 80’s”. Was it that long ago? I guess it was. Man, I’m getting old.

  20. bearsrulepackdrool - Feb 7, 2012 at 2:50 PM

Any truth to the rumors she had M.I.A. deported?
