Boone's homerun was a set-up by Mr. Stupid, Grady Little. Nobody remembers, but Wakefield had been great in that series. Putting in a knuckleballer who is always a risk for a solo homer in a sudden death away extra-innings game was a ridiculous call by Little, who should have had the game in his pocket by that time anyway, having allowed Pedro to pitch on fumes.

As for the endless quest for 200, 1) Wake left two of those games with leads that were blown by the bullpen and 2) Who else were they going to pitch? Tito had decided he wanted to leave Aceves in the bullpen.

I have to agree with that. For the money, they certainly got more value from Wake than from either Lakey or Dicek

Wonder what the snark miester has to say about that?

Wake should get a day in Fenway whenever he decides to retire. I have always appreciated the innings he has provided the Sox and the bullets he has taken for the team, not to mention the wins and the saves.

It wouldnt shock me if he could put up some wins in the NL, change of leauge and all, but if no one wants to offer a contract then he can easily retire with dignity. He has had a long career, years after he was cut by the Pirates and told he was all done.

Is he a hall of famer? No, but a hall of pretty good, I think over all yes.

The problem is that his "consistent" level has changed. He used to be consistent at 190 IP, ERA+ slightly over 100. Now he's becoming consitent at 150 IP, ERA+ slightly over 80. They gave him the benefit of the doubt last year, but aren't doing so this year. It's not simply because of his age. Wakefield is clearly not the same guy he was at the 2009 All Star break.

As a Sox fan I'd welcome him back at the right price, even I'd he wants to partially retire and only play at home or when the weather gets warm, when the knuckleballer moves better anyways.

Either way he can be proud of a long and productive career with two championships to show for it.

Wakefield has been an incredibly consistent pitcher (not from game to game, inning to inning or pitch to pitch, but season to season) and an incredibly consistent pitcher should be given the benefit of the doubt after an off-season. And he would be, if he were 35, not 46. But since age really isn't that significant with knuckleball pitchers, it really doesn't make much sense that someone would see if he could bounce back for a year or two. The Red Sox should move on, yes, and I think Wake should quit now with his head high, but I doubt that he's really done.
