True…the problem is that he has never faced pitching that even approaches ML quality. The minors are littered with guys that play great defense and can’t hit a breaking pitch or command the strike zone against high quality pitchers.

It’s definitely a gamble to spend that much on an unproven player. But, you have to look what clubs are gambling on. His defense and arm and speed should translate well. They are gambling on the average power combo for 6-8 million a year. When you look at overall MLB outfielder pay you will see a worse players for a lot more.

Shelling out $45M plus to a guy that is at least 26, that is not even the best player in Cuba, and has never faced talent above A-level ball…is NOT fiscal responsibility.

Jason1214 hit the nail on the head. With Theo Epstein assuming the position of Head Honcho with the cubs, instituting an insistence on fiscal responsibility, the Cubs are in prime position to shell out 45-60 mill for this unproven commodity

Less than $40 million huh Marlins. You’re not going to get your man. I’ll guess he goes to Cubs for minimum of $45-60 million. Problem with that is, you either have to dump Soriano, or go with a Soriano/DeJesus/Cespedes starting OF.

I think that’s definitely the plan, at least I would hope so for any team that signs him. Let him see better pitching and adjust to things he may not have seen before.

This would be a good signing for the Marlins. However they should put him in the minors and work him up to the majors because I personally am a bit skeptical he will step right in and hit major league pitching. A good talent from what I seen but needs time to develop into a major league hitter.
