I dont blame him for not wanting to sign in Boston. If his goal is to sign a 1 year deal and play well to set up a bigger contract next season I dont see the AL East has his best option for pitching well.

Definitelyy overplayed his hand. But he is definitely his own man, to the point of being hard-headed. I respect that in a man who knows he is already rich. But what he will do; I have no idea. Still hope to see him as a Card.

If he’s not going to get his contract demands anyway and he isn’t going to get his location preference, why not just sit out until July and have your pick of contenders to play the 2nd half of the season with? Then you are only playing half a year in a spot where you may not have wanted to spend the whole summer. You’re also seeing a much clearer picture of who are the most likely championship contenders. Come July and August he will have teams begging him to replace whatever starter has gone down with an injury and he’ll still get the $5 million that teams want to pay him now for the whole season.

I don’t normally think its a good strategy for a player to wait for a midseason injury, but at this point I would say Oswalt might as well wait for pitchers and catchers to report. That gives GMs a chance to find out which borderline starters did their off-season training at Old Country Buffet.

As you know I agree completely. I see the squeeze the Cards are putting on Oswalt as short-sighted. Let us say he goes ahead and signs with the Cards for 5.5 mil. If he has a typical season, and wins 16 games do you really believe he won’t try and recoup the cash in his next contract? On one hand the Cards are offering him a deal with the expectations that he puts up numbers as usual but paying him as if he were a run-of-the-mill 4th-5th starter. If they can get him for 8 mil it is still a bargain, and I would prefer a somewhat satisfied hurler, rather than one with a bone to pick.

did you miss the ludwick signing for 2.5 million? that fits in with the renteria signing, the jim edmonds signing and the rolen signing although in his case they did get 1 good year out him.

I thought a player had to at least be a Cardinal under LaRussa, and preferably have been a Cardinal when Jocketty was the GM….have the Reds signed more recent washed up Cardinals?
