Picture of the Day: M’s open spring training in Arizona

Feb 12, 2012, 2:09 PM EST

The Mariners open their season in late March in Tokyo, so they’re in camp a week earlier than most teams. Which gives us the image below — a simple but wonderful picture of baseball players performing light running drills on a field in Arizona (via the M’s official Twitter feed). It’s back, people. Baseball is back.

As opposed to govermentment workers, ticket takers, and door security?

      • Old Gator - Feb 12, 2012 at 5:29 PM

No, as opposed to those gregarious cows standing around chatting in that Far Side cartoon….

Tomorrow’s Picture of the Day: Montero crying in a corner, missing winning baseball.

On a 30 degree day this makes me feel warm. Pitchers and catchers is always a welcome sight.

    Who are these effing guys?

    • Bryz - Feb 12, 2012 at 6:15 PM

The ones I could pick out (without checking a roster) are relievers Steve Delabar, Tom Wilhelmsen, and Shawn Camp. You should at least be familiar with Camp.

        According to mlb.com:

        88 Steve Garrison
        31 Matt Fox
        69 Jeff Marquez
        50 Erasimo Ramirez
        78 (number obscured) Jarrett Grube

Household names. three of the five above have actually pitched in the majors, extra points to anyone who can name them without looking them up. I couldn’t.

Forget the groundhog . . . spring is right around the corner :)

  11. Panda Claus - Feb 13, 2012 at 8:59 AM

I too applaud the return of baseball to our approaching Spring. Far be it from me to offend anyone by saying that at first glance at this photo I thought I was pondering a gathering of football players in the field.

Oh baseball, please spare us of these ghastly mockeries of besmirched and convoluted uniforms that are tweaked each year in an effort to squeeze more dollars out of our pockets. Please don’t become the NFL in this regard.

    I’m gonna cry
