Orioles would eat Kevin Gregg’s salary to make him go away

Baltimore has spent the offseason adding veteran relievers and in the process have pushed last season’s primary closer, Kevin Gregg, into a low-leverage role.

Not surprisingly the Orioles are interesting in trading Gregg, who’s owed $5.8 million this season, and Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports that “they’d eat a chunk” of salary to facilitate a move.

Gregg has racked up 144 career saves without ever being a particularly good fit at closer, and in fact his 4.07 ERA is the second-highest among all active pitchers with at least 100 career saves ahead of only Danys Baez (4.25). No one else is above 3.75. And that includes a 4.37 ERA and 53/40 K/BB ratio in 60 innings last season.

With that said, if the Orioles are willing to eat, say, $3.8 million of his $4.8 million salary and would accept a low-level prospect in return Gregg could help possibly some teams as a veteran middle reliever.

Sure he could. Watching his gopher pitches soar to their apogees and descend gracefully into the bleachers would do more for keeping their cervical vertebrae supple than a yoga class.

Agreed, but the pitches would have to be near the plate, I guess watching how far off the plate would be good stretching exercises.

How did Gravity’s Rainbow begin? “A screaming comes across the sky. It has happened before, but there is nothing to compare it to now….”

Nice description of Gregg coughing up a walk-off.

LOL it’s always looked like he’s eaten a bunch of his salary…or something

Baseball player fat jokes aren’t as worn on me as they are for other people, but I can think of so many more players that are so much more fat than Kevin Gregg. I’m not even sure he is fat, but just big, at 6’6″ 230. That’s like 15 pounds more than Michael Jordan in his prime.

I am reading this as the Orioles would eat Kevin Gregg to make him go away.

He would look great in a Red Sox or Yankee uniform.

Especially if you’re a Baltimore fan.

Can’t have too many RP’s. And since he wouldn’t be closing, bring him to Boston and watch he and Papi become best of friends, can’t imagine his salary is too much . . .

    Wait! $5.8M?!

Even if the O’s ate half of that . . . forget it. John Heyman proclaimed that the Red Sox are now a small market team.

Oh, and Gregg isn’t a Boarass client.

With his stats, he looks like an RP you could have one too many of. Surely every team has someone at Triple A who can do about the same for a lot less money.

I am kinda mezmerized by that picture…
    The dumb, ill-fitting glasses…
    The dopey, lopsided smirk/smile…
    Generic gray backdrop.
Where the hell did this picture come from, and did Gregg authorize it’s disbursement?
Most of my pictures look like the one above – which is why I try to stay BEHIND the camera…

Have any of the O’s coaches ever told Gregg just to throw it down the middle and see what happens?
