If another team pops up then it might have been worth it, but the story thus far has been “Sox have need, Oswalt doesn’t want to be there” versus “Cardinals don’t have need, Oswalt wants to pitch there”. With pitchers and catchers starting to show up right about nowish, it’d really behoove him and either club that he chooses where he goes. I want him to go to the Sox, but more than anything I just kind of want this whole thing to go away.

If they are entertaining signing Oswalt that would likely put the Red Sox 2012 Payroll for MLB Luxury Tax purposes at about $190MM +/-. That would put their Luxury Tax bill at about $5MM when it’s time to pay MLB. The only time the Red Sox had a higher Luxury Tax bill was in 2007 when they sent MLB a check for $6.06MM
