UPDATE: It’s now being reported that the Indians have a minor league deal in place for Garland, pending a physical.

8:50 AMKen Rosenthal reports this morning that the Indians are “working on” a deal for righty Jon Garland.

Garland used to be a decent innings-eater, but the innings ate him last year. His season ended in July with rotator cuff surgery.  He’s not likely to start spring training on time or, at the very least, at 100%.  I’d assume that this would be a minor league deal with lots of incentives built in if he makes the club.

    Excellent signing.

Keith Law rated the Indians as having the second worst minor league system in all of baseball, but that was BEFORE Jon Garland was inked to a minor league deal!

This sets the table for Garland vs. Verlander, Game 163, with the Central Division crown riding on the arms of those two great warriors.

    Advantage: Cleveland.

Not since the halcyon days of Rapid Robert Feller has the Tribe been able to trot out so able an ace as Garland.

Now that the Indians have acquired a vast wealth of starting pitchers, perhaps a trade is in order. I should think the Braves would be interested in a reunion with Derek Lowe. Jason Heyward and cash considerations seems a fair price.
