Report: MLB to void Orioles’ signing of 17-year-old Korean

Korea’s protest has apparently won out: according to MASN’s Roch Kubatko, MLB is set to void the contract agreed to by the Orioles and 17-year-old left-hander Seong-Min Kim on Jan. 30.

The KBO filed a letter of protest over the signing earlier this month, stating that the Orioles failed to go through the proper channels in signing an amatuer Korean player. The Orioles acknowledged the breach in protocol, with GM Dan Duquette apologizing earlier this month for not doing a status check through the commissioner’s office.

As a response to the signing, the Korean Baseball Association, which holds sway over amateur baseball, banned Orioles scouts from attending high school and college games in the country.

Kubatko’s tweet indicates that Kim will be made a free agent and that the Orioles will be eligible to re-sign him at a later date.

Best thing that ever happened to the kid. Until that clown sells the team, Baltimore’s going to be a graveyard for MLB players.

Going to be? Take your violin out to Camden Yards and play “Night on Bald Mountain,” and watch what rises from beneath the sod.

MLB this morning announced the establishment of a demilitarized zone between the Baltimore Orioles and South Korea. The zone extends from the 35th parallel to the 39th parallel and will be heavily mined on both sides with legal boilerplate. Dan Duquette will be closely watched by both MLB and Korean baseball executives to be sure he doesn’t attempt to tunnel under the demilitarized zone, and his casts will be checked on a regular basis for evidence of topsoil and gravel.

As someone who has moved from Baltimore to Indiana (and I still HATE the Colts), let me just say, “any” MLB team surpasses not having one. These comments about how bad the O’s and their ownership are probably resonate from folks watching AA or AAA teams. The O’s are not the 1st MLB team to step on Korea’s toes (Angels in years past) but since they are a bit down at present everyone wants to pile on. The O’s will have a chance to resign the lad in about 30 days or so. All you Doom and Gloomers, how about leaving a note concerning your favorite team and as they falter, and ya know they will, stop on back here so I can give ya a dose of your own medicine.

    Go O’s!
