You know, I’m lucky to be young enough that there really hasn’t been any of my childhood idols from the sports world that have passed away, but seeing just how much respect this guy has with reporters players and fans alike makes me sad to see him pass. Wish I got to really see you play Kid, rest in peace.

hammy: you don’t need to be a child to have heroes. I was 35 when the Kid came to the Mutts, probably already jaded in lots of respects, but the guy became a bonafide hero of mine. The sadness and sense of loss I feel today couldn’t be any more poignant if it had all happened when I was twelve years old.

Carter’s career wasn’t really about the numbers, as impressive as they are. He was one of those HOF players who really enjoyed playing the game, and had the proven ability to elevate both the Expos and Mets. A true winner, both on and off the field.
