Forgive me its been a few years, but wasn’t the giants 2002 rotation something like Livan HErnandez, Kirk Reuter, RUss Ortiz, and Jason Schmidt?

There was not much Barry Bonds could do about that.

Craig, it is misleading to quote all the gaudy numbers without pointing out that most if not all were performance enhanced. Buster is the linchpin and just as important to this team as Barryroid was to the prior Giants, but Buster is pure and we can root for him.

For all of Bonds numbers he could bring home a World Series title. And while Posey isn’t the same offensive force, his role not only in the offense but in handling the league’s best pitching staff in his rookie year did. That’s why he is as important as Bonds. Winning isn’t about numbers- Posey is the heart of the team- something Bonds never even tried to be.

I agree with you there. Steroid allegations aside, Bonds was a generational talent from an athletic and tools perspective. Posey is a helluva player but he doesn’t have Bonds’ tools. Though almost no one else does either.

Oh, and Bonds cheated his way to all those numbers. At least the Hall of Fame won’t have to worry about addressing it. He’s not going to sniff that place.

Using your line of reasoning, 27/21 would extrapolate to 91/71 over a 162 game season.
Of course all estimates are just that and your mileage may vary, but that works out to 20 games over .500 and good enough for the WC slot.

It’s funny because they were 27-21 when he got injured.. only 6 games over .500 yet finished 10 games over .500.

I know it’s just a line at the end of the column, but I think he could have phrased it differently.

Posey is an extremely important player and going from him to Whiteside is a massive downgrade. Still, replacing Bonds with even a terrific fourth outfielder would have been a bigger one.

Matthew, I don’t think Bags is comparing Posey to Bonds from an ability standpoint. I think he is more making the point that, like Bonds, Posey is now the Giants offensive centerpiece. Look at the offensive tailspin the Giants entered into after Posey was lost. it very likely cost them a playoff berth.
