Brett Cecil is in The Best Shape of His Life; quotes Bruce Lee

Feb 21, 2012, 8:20 AM EDT

Brett Cecil, Scott Richmond

Rumors of Blue Jays pitcher Brett Cecil‘s weight loss have floated around all winter, but today the Globe and Mail has a full report on it.

And, unlike a lot of the BSOHL stories, this one is damn definitive and pretty impressive: Cecil has gone from 252 pounds last season to 219.  Which, on a 6’1″ frame is quite noticeable.

But it’s not just the weight loss that’s impressive. It’s his attitude and everything. Including what he refers to as “some deep reading”:

He showed a reporter his iPhone reader to pull a quote from Tao of Jeet Kune Do by the late martial arts icon Bruce Lee: “All life is a truth that can be fully realized only when false notions of a separate self, whose destiny can be considered apart from the whole, are once forever annihilated.”

What does that mean to Cecil?

“Get rid of the bull [crap],” he said. “Do what needs to be done. Throw ego out the window and just do it.”

OK, sure. If that’s what it means to him, that’s all that matters.

Huh? I always lived by the theory of Miyagi. Wax on, wax off.

You have so much to learn, Grasshopper. But if it is worth 30 pounds, maybe STEX will become an acolyte.

Over to you Kopy. I have been touting Cecil as a BSOHL candidate all year. It was officially confirmed when I read my morning paper.

I don’t mean to brag, although you probably should, since thanks to you Brett Cecil was already on the list. He was “awaiting confirmation” with Phil Hughes after you pointed out his significant weight loss, until I merged the lists out of laziness. Now everybody is confirmed. Cecil, like Hughes was only a matter of time.

Even if Sabathia lost 50 pounds, he would still not qualify for BSOHL.

too bad its not going to help him on the mound

Its not like Cecil was fat to begin with. 30lbs is about what a lady gains during pregnancy and then loses by about 18 months after (all going well), just to put that into perspective for those looking for a yardstick.

I’m more than a little unsure about what all this ego-less mysticism might mean. He never struck me a being Mr. Pompous. Well, if it means he can throw low and away strikes to righties, then who cares?

33 lbs is a considerable chunk of weight to lose in 5 months. And he didn’t even have the benefit of breastfeeding!

      • bigharold - Feb 21, 2012 at 12:52 PM

My kids are all grown but as I remember I think had Cecil been drinking breast milk for 5 months he’d probably put on weight.

        Just sayin….
