After finalizing a contract with Raul Ibanez earlier today, the Yankees have quickly moved on to the next item on their agenda.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Yankees and Eric Chavez have agreed to a contract, pending a physical. Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com adds that it’s a one-year, $900,000 deal which includes incentives.

Chavez batted .263/.320/.356 with two homers, 26 RBI and a .676 OPS over 175 plate appearances with the Yankees last season. The 34-year-old missed a large chunk of the year due to a fractured foot and is a poor bet to stay healthy, but he currently projects as Alex Rodriguez‘s primary backup at third base. Barring an injury, Ramiro Pena figures to open the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

…and everyone Cashman wanted under contract for 2012 season is.

they signed Chavez and Ibanez for 2 mil…..not bad

The expensive part of that equation is using 2 roster spots for those guys. Teams can always spend more money, but you only have 25 active roster spots.

Yea…having Ibanez and Chavez as backups is a real problem. Two class acts and great chemistry guys in the clubhouse with experience to play 20 games a year and serve as mentors for the younger players. Stop hating…that makes zero sense.

Roster spots are always important especially for the Yankees. But even after signing signing those 2 players as you say they still have 1 roster spot open on the 25 man roster. Plus the fact when you consider how cheaply both those players are signed for in guaranteed dollars there is nothing stopping the Yankees if they don’t perform from letting them go at any point in the season. So really as far as those 2 players are concerned, them taking up a roster spot is insignificant.

The most important part of this story was the last part…

“Ramiro Pena figures to open the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.”

Even though he, and everyone else on the AAA squad, will be playing there games everywhere BUT Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The stadium is closed this year for renovations. They say once they are complete it will be the nicest minor league stadium. Something to look forward to I suppose.

      • foreverchipper10 - Feb 22, 2012 at 3:18 PM

        Damn it. Their games.

I feel bad for pen a AND Nunez. Both could play on plenty of teams.

  6. shanabartels - Feb 21, 2012 at 10:10 PM

It’s about time. Watching Nunez attempt to fill in at 3B isn’t very funny.

smart move, this guy will do a solid job backing up

    • proudlycanadian - Feb 22, 2012 at 2:16 AM

He might have to play a lot if Arod continues to get hurt. At third, you have a fine pair of elderly and fragile players who have seen their best years.

You were doing so good until you go to.300 most years, and you started to go down hill. You began the next sentence: “i do believe” with a lower case letter. You end the fiasco with code work: “but the ? is who’ll.” Write out the word “question.” Learn to write out you thoughts in MS Word befor pasting to the boards so you can use spell check and grammar check. If you write better you’ll be better understood.

I’ll give you this: I understand you perfectly.

Never have I seen “I am a flaming asshole” written so clearly and repeatedly by the same person. Kudos.
