The man who collected Ryan Braun’s sample is revealed

Ryan Braun made some pretty strong comments yesterday about how his urine sample was handled by the collector, saying that he was a “victim of a process that completely broke down and failed.”

We’re still hearing different information regarding where the sample was stored in the collector’s home — some reports say it was stored in a cooler in his basement while others say it was left in a tupperware container on a desk — but the identity of the collector is no longer a mystery.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reported yesterday afternoon that the collector’s name is Dino Laurenzi. He has collected specimens for MLB since 2005 and even the NFL and NHL through his job with Comprehensive Drug Testing, Inc.

The Associated Press left a message on Laurenzi’s cell phone seeking comment, but they were able to speak with the collector’s father, Dino Laurenzi, Sr. He said his son was a collector for baseball’s testing program and is currently at spring training. He didn’t know his son was involved in Braun’s case, but said that any accusations about his conduct “would be unfounded.”

“He’s a straight shooter. Never been in trouble,” Laurenzi Sr. said.

Laurenzi sounds like a pretty experienced individual by all accounts, so one wonders who stands to benefit by revealing his name to the press. It’s probably not Braun or even arbitrator Shyam Das.

So…..Dino Laurenzi tested positive for PEDs? Let’s get this BS over with and focus on the 2012 season.

  2. ditto65 - Feb 25, 2012 at 10:31 AM

So, how does Dino feel about the Ryan Braun PED Appeal decision?

  3. nategearhart - Feb 25, 2012 at 10:53 AM

The one constant over the years in all the breaches of confidentiality in MLB is…MLB. Someone in baseball is a real schmuck.

    • patsandsox - Feb 25, 2012 at 5:22 PM

There are more leaks in this case than in the Titanic. Another PR disater for the SS Selig. Way to go Bud!

  4. frankenderek - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:01 AM

Thank goodness you found this out! I can finally sleep at night!

  5. Ben - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:04 AM

Braun articles just aren’t the same without Craig’s vindictive tone to set everybody off

  6. steve7921 - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:07 AM

It just proves that MLB needs to reveal the actual reasoning behind the arbitrators decisions or there will always be doubts cast on this courier….justice needs to be transparent in order to work and if the public doesn’t know the reason why his appeal was successful, then the process is not surviving any purpose. There could be so many other reasons why this appeal was successful but the only reason being given is “the courier did something…” If that is true, why hasn’t MLB announced they are no longer using this company as the courier….

So many questions and yet no answers. The real outcry by the media should be over what is the actual reason behind Braun’s successul appeal. If it was the courier, then he and his company should the focus of the scrutiny as to how and why this happened….

      your argument is invalid

    • paperlions - Feb 25, 2012 at 1:05 PM

The written version of the arbiter’s decision is supposed to be out in a week or so (I think he is required to complete it within 30 days of the decision, but it is expected to be out much sooner than that).

  7. deathmonkey41 - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:23 AM

You guys are either blind or just plain stupid. The people leaking this information are obviously the same people who leaked the earth-shattering news about A-Rod’s brown bag lunch.

  8. detroitcityryda - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:36 AM

did Braun being a jew have anything to do with him winning the appeal we all know it wouldn’t happened to Cabrera or Hamilton .

    • Old Gator - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:38 AM

Oh sure it did. All through history, Jews have been granted the benefit of the doubt.

      Drooling imbecile.

      • Ben - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:53 AM

Gator, speaking for myself I think we should actually let this one go. Let’s just substitute “Being a Jew means you have some sort of secret cabal that gets you out of failed drug tests” for “Jews run the banks.” The idiots get the conspiracy theory, and we get the satisfaction of knowing it’s a pretty innocuous conspiracy theory to keep the idiots entertained.

      • cur68 - Feb 25, 2012 at 12:04 PM

I knew we’d have a “Jewish Conspiracy” by this AM. How did I know? I was counting on some people’s ability to run for the nearest visible evidence of a conspiracy, adjust their foil hats to “send”, their sense of fairness to “off” and their mouths to “spew”. Next up we should see the “he’s not Jewish enough” crowd weigh in. Hey, I hope I’m wrong, but evidence and history is on my side.

      • badmamainphilliesjamas - Feb 25, 2012 at 1:48 PM

Guess I overslept for my cabal meeting once again. All this controlling the media, running the banking system AND manipulating MLB drug tests is exhausting.

      • cur68 - Feb 25, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Your cabal should branch out…maybe aim for cartel status.

      • Old Gator - Feb 25, 2012 at 5:28 PM

Ben – you might be right. I read in a recent issue of The Journal of Irreproducible Results that drooling imbeciles are incipiently mitotic, and insulting them causes them to divide into two genetic replicas of themselves. Who needs more of them?

    • deathmonkey41 - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:55 AM

      Steve Carlton- is that you?

      • Old Gator - Feb 25, 2012 at 5:29 PM

        Tim McCarver! Is that you?

    • oldpaddy - Feb 25, 2012 at 1:07 PM

      Howard Sterns Penis!!!!!!!!

  9. Old Gator - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:39 AM

Okay, verbal jousting with morons aside for the moment, DJ, this whole story is getting kinda old. Don’t you have anything fresh and interesting to report on, like, maybe, the McCourt divorce?

  10. icanspeel - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:58 AM

So should Brewer fans send him thank you letters or hate mail? Guess it depends if the sample was really dirty or if the delay contributed to it huh

  11. chiadam - Feb 25, 2012 at 12:05 PM

The Collector sounds like a TNT series.

    • chadjones27 - Feb 25, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Pathetic that somebody took the time and effort to track down and report who the guy is that mails samples of pee.

  13. hushbrother - Feb 25, 2012 at 1:07 PM

Dino should stick to his day job, producing movies

    • aceshigh11 - Feb 25, 2012 at 1:27 PM

Ha! I doubt many people got that one…Dino de Laurentiis produced Evil Dead II, one of the greatest films of all-time.

      Bruce Campbell is god. Fact.

      • deathmonkey41 - Feb 25, 2012 at 1:42 PM

    Old news on the n

  15. waxedagain - Feb 25, 2012 at 2:35 PM

The unknown angle on the sample is that Braun revealed two other players were tested. Were those samples handled the same, and were those test results positive or negative?

    • blabidibla - Feb 27, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Who cares? Braun signed off on the seals of his sample during the process. The seals were in place the entire time. He never contested it was his sample.

Braun accusimg an Itialian? This could get ugly!

    • larryboodry - Feb 25, 2012 at 4:57 PM

It’s already ugly…Whoever leaked this guy’s name should be flogged.

      • patsandsox - Feb 25, 2012 at 5:28 PM

What is the point of leaking his name?

  18. gadgetsnsports - Feb 26, 2012 at 7:46 AM

What they forgot to report, from that sample sitting at Dinos house is that Braun is pregnant, has a bad case of heartworm and a bad case of chlamydia.

  19. blabidibla - Feb 27, 2012 at 10:38 AM

Amazing how Braun fails a test and the guy who held it ends up being vilified. There was less actual evidence on Bonds.

  20. comeonnowguys - Feb 28, 2012 at 2:51 PM

Where are all the little Brewer backers crying Cub fan conspiracy now, by the way?
