Let me clarify my comment for non Cardinals fans. The Cardinals had two bad droughts (1967-1982) (1982-2006). 24 freakin years of Jose DeLeon’s and Tony Pena’s. The Gashouse Gang and the 1960′s Cardinals did most of the heavy lifting. I’m 59 years old and when your team wins the World Series you don’t know how many years you have left until they win again. I never thought it would be 24 years. They’re on a good roll, have a great minor league system and have 5 of the 1st 60 draft picks this year. Very seldom do teams win back to back. Look at the Yankees with their $250 million dollar payroll struggle with making the playoffs because they are hamstrung with bad contracts. They don’t have an ownership problem they have a G.M. problem.

I took a tour of new Busch stadium a couple of years ago, and the tour guide showed us how their uniforms have changed over the years. He pointed out that sometime way back when they stirred up some controversy by wearing a patch noting the fact that they had won the World Series the year before, so this isn’t the first time they’ve done it. I just don’t remember if they did it that last time they won, or if other baseball teams have done this. Of the major sports, they may be the only team to have ever done this. Yeah, it’s a little pretentious and flies in the face of the “classy” aura they work so hard to prove/maintain, but what are we going to do? They’re the champs until they’re not.

The only way this should be contriversial is if they DIDN’T win the World Series last year. They are the World Series Champs until someone else wins it.

You are an idiot. I think this could backfire on the cards because, when you try to shove it “in your face” to the other teams, it just gives them an incentive to beat your butt. However, we do salute them for the great W-S victory last season.
This however, is going to be a new year. Watch out when you come into the Great American Ballpark!

“Especially the cardinals”. Objectively, they flukes in last year. Played great, but a fluke nonetheless. (and I was rooting for them hard).

Today, the cardinals are a vastly different franchise from last years and even their winning teams of 10 years ago. A new coaching staff and the loss of Pujols can’t be considered normal year to year changes.

I would think this could go either way for them over the course of the season. When they have a small losing streak or fall far back in the playoff race, maybe it reminds them they’ve overcome bigger deficits. On the other hand, if they have a big losing streak, or just a crappy season, it would start to kind of mock them a bit. I could see one or two of the more eccentric players talking to it: “shut up, patch! We can win, we don’t need pujols. Ok, stop laughing patch! Gah!”

Or, the superstitious players might think they are tempting fate.

I have honestly never heard of such a thing….do all teams do this now? I know patches are all the rage….but I can’t recall one to commemorate winning the year before.

Not sure I understand this comment. I guess you could say this if you are the Yankees, but really “for a team like the cardinals”?

Yeah I guess 3 World Series trips since 2004 and 2 World Series titles since 2006 would put the Cardinals in some kind of bottom basement, have a good run once every decade kind of franchise category.

I mean a lot of other teams have certainly won more world series (11) than the Cardinals (looks around, only sees the Yankees).

Most excellent patch. Too bad Dinero Gigante formally Albert Pujols won’t get to wear it. It looks like the Cub, Brewer, and Reds fans don’t like the patch. At least we get to enjoy the patch for a year. You never know when you’ll get to wear it again.
