This is clearly a sign that the Reds are grooming him to be the future closer ... especially with Ryan Madson only having a 1 year contract. It seems like a lot of money for a setup man ... granted he held lefties to a .206 average but right handers hit .249. I just finished up a preview of the Reds on my blog, and I think they have a legit chance to win 90+ games if they stay healthy.

Check out the Red's X-factor and more sports, google <strong> Daily Grind Sports

Thanks !

I agree 3-4 years would be perfect for the team but I'm under the impression that he's looking for something longer. And because it's the Reds, money committed to BP would definitely affect their offer to Votto.

I just wanted to suggest that you appreciate a good signing for once, instead of being negative. If they let BP and Votto both walk, then I'll join you in the rage-filled posts following the inevitable signing of Skip Schumaker.

It seems that is the hold up, metalhead65

<blockquote>"That's part of what complicates it, the number of years that he wants and what we feel comfortable doing," Jocketty said.</blockquote>

You're right--what a perfectly sane way to look at this. The fact that the Reds had $16M to spread over 3 seasons is clear proof that they REALLY had $250M to spread over 8 seasons, but just stubbornly refused to spend it. I've been saying something similar to my town council for years: the fact that they have enough money to mow the grass at the public school twice a month is slam dunk proof they also could afford to build me a mansion-sized refrigerator full of beluga caviar. Can you BELIEVE they think I'm a crank??!!

Also, kudos for pointing out that Marshall hasn't thrown a pitch for the Reds. As all real fans know, prior MLB experience has no predictive value for future MLB performance: if you haven't worn a team's uniform yet, none of those numbers count.

right because at 30 he is over the hill. not saying lock him to a 5-6 year deal but a 3-4 year one would be perfect. as for votto when you are talking the amount it will take to keep him the 50 mil it will take to keep phillips is a drop in the bucket and will have no effect on his deal.

Give it a rest once in a while, man. They just signed one of the best setup guys in baseball and you're complaining? BP deserves the money he wants, but, at his age, it's not a wise move for the Reds if they want to have any hope of signing Votto long-term.
