Having said that, Beras didn’t benefit from being older; he *would* have benefited from being older, had other teams known. As you’re pointing out, next year is too late, so he’s missed the boat.

But if he really turns 17 in December, that makes him eligible to sign next year…and next year there is a cap. I think it is $2.9M. So if he were really 16, then he couldn’t sign a $4.5M contract unless he eats up a teams entire international cap for two years.

I guess I’m not following your line of thinking, Craig. If everyone knew he was old enough to sign, and there would’ve been more action on him, doesn’t that suggest that he could’ve been offered more than $4.5M? So he actually missed the opportunity to benefit from being older. By being 16, MLB clubs would’ve pursued him more a year from now. By being 17, he presumably settled for less than he could’ve gotten.
