Maturity is nice, but so is a multi-million dollar signing bonus in the bag. And a chance to come up very early if your development curve is good. If Harper is half the player they say, he will be a free agent with seven figure offers before he is 30. I am a strong believer in college as the great hope for 99% of the American public to advance. But a young athlete who is sufficiently developed and talented can’t afford to waste that time.

If you are really college material, you can always go back.

No, that isn’t happening….there is absolutely no comparison between the talent Stock has and that of Harper….it’s like comparing Ryan Howard to Albert Pujols.

Somewhere, Bryce Harper is having this read to him, while showing great concern.

At the flamining out as a catcher at a young age part.

Not the being smart enough to go to college for two years and gain a little maturity before putting on his big boy pants part.

Stock’s an interesting story. I remember hearing about him in his high school years. He was seen as a sure-fire first rounder in 2007, but instead graduated early and started classes at USC before his 17th birthday. USC coaches thought he could be the next Jeff Clement (which is actually a good thing at USC), but it just didn’t go as expected. He was still seen as a very interesting draft prospect, mainly because he was still 19 and had a big arm.

Too late? He’s only 22. It would seem they gave him a fair chance as a catcher and is still plenty young enough to try to make the switch.

I hope this works out for the kid, I remember when he was drafted and alot were indeed saying they had him out of position.

This kind of personifies the Jeff Luhnow drafting era in STL, very little success with position players but chalked full quality arms.
