Carl Crawford out at least 5-7 more days, unlikely for opener

Mar 5, 2012, 3:25 PM EDT

Red Sox Crawford runs to first on single against Milwaukee Brewers during first inning of their MLB inter-league baseball game in Boston

Last week Carl Crawford suffered a setback with his surgically repaired wrist and an examination today revealed inflammation, manager Bobby Valentine told reporters.

Crawford is expected to be sidelined for at least 5-7 more games and Valentine indicated that he doesn’t expect the left fielder to be ready for Opening Day.

Obviously the setback is unfortunate, because Crawford had been feeling good about his recovery and may have pushed himself too hard because of it, but the initial post-surgery timetable suggested he’d miss the first several weeks of the regular season anyway.

Odds are the Red Sox’s outfield for Game 1 will be Jacoby Ellsbury, Cody Ross, and Ryan Sweeney.

Given how he played last year, this will be no loss. When will Kalish be ready to steal an outfield spot?

I drafted the Fu&kin injury prone guy who will probably not play till June?

They’ll never know he isn’t in the line-up, believe me he won’t be missed.

You all are out of your mind. A guy whos never batted below .300 90% of his career and he has a down year, like most contract year players, and you completely destroy him. Listen to yourself. Who are you to judge another person like that? What do you do? You sit here and type words and he bust his ass every day to prove people like you wrong. God forbid he has a bad game this season and everyone will write him off, once again. Carl is probably like nicest person in the damn league and you sit here and bash him like he’s a machine. People are so quick to judge. Who are you to judge another human being? Oh your fantasy team didn’t do good? FUCK you’re fantasy team. When he has a season like he has every other year of his career this year don’t jump on a bandwagon and support him. Just sit here and keep writing about how bad he’s is. You’re all pathetic and I god honestly hope that Crawford’s play slaps you right in the god damn face this year. Have a great fucking day.

that’s a little angrier than i would have put it, but i agree. crawford’s a great player who had an off year. i’m pretty sure sox fans wrote papi off a few years back, and yet pretty happy to see how he’s done since then, so…
